My old computer had Windows 10 on it and one day it just would not boot to Win10. Long story short, I bought a new computer and now I want to install Windows 7 (64 bit) on the old computer to use as a backup The HD was good as I took it out and I could read it as an external drive (was able to get my data off of it). Now I've reformatted the HD and want to install Windows 7 from a disk with the ISO file on it. How is the easiest way to do that??

As your old computer came with win 10 it's probably a Skylake or Kabylake (Intel) or Rysen (AMD). For this new gen you have to add new drivers to the Win 7 installation disk.
You must give us all the specks so we can guide you.

The computer was old. I had the Windows 10 free "update" on it (had Windows 7 on before Win10). I'll try the diskpart trick and see what happens as the bios did not see the hd. Oh what fun computers are.....NOT

Your Bios has to see the hard drive before you can do anything, so get that straightened out first :)

I did not do that the first time I tried to install Win7 (was not sure what to do then). When I get some time I'm going to try that.

Wamsert, there is only one way to do a clean install. Clean Install Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums.
If you have more than one disk, you should detach ALL other HDD's and SSD's (Very important) or you can end with the boot loader on one disk and the OS on another disk.

On OEM computers (Dell, HP, etc) there is always an easiest way that is the Factory restore. It will format the C: drive and install a disk image from the Recovery partition.

If Windows isn't working well you can do a Repair install (must be started under Windows). It will keep all user data and programs (also all trash) and reinstall windows. Repair Install - Windows 7 Help Forums

For the updates MS releases SP2 for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

Well I just tried all you told me to do and it can NOT see the hd I have in the computer. That said I had another hd that has XP on it and it booted so I might have a bad drive. Now I just need to know how to upgrade from XP to Win7, the quick and EASY way.

To go from 'XP' to Windows 7 you must do a Clean Install of Windows 7.

Their is no upgrade from 'XP' to Windows 7.
Jack
This is what I want to do anyway. Just have to find time to get it done. Right now the old machine is not "seeing" the USB mouse and keyboard. Oh what fun......
