Solved VirtualBox doesn't show 64-bit on my Windows 7 64-bit machine.

Good evening,

Does anyone know why VirtualBox doesn't show 64-bit on the drop down list on my Windows 7 64-bit machine please?

I Googled it and they said about enabling a virtulisation in the BIOS settings but mine doesn't have that.

It also doesn't have a Hyper-V option in the Windows Programs & Features.

Your CPU does not support virtualization and that is why it does not appear in the BIOS. VirtualBox requires VT-x to run a 64 bit client OS, even when the host is 64 bits.

Edit: Hyper-v is not supported in Windows 7.

That's a shame because I managed to integrate updates (Windows 7 for a more up to date ISO installation) using DISM and wanted to test out the results in a VM.
Can you recommend another VM that is free and will run on my system please?

Would Microsoft Virtual PC do the job?

VirtualBox, VMWare, and VirtualPC are all free but none will support a 64 bit client without virtualization. VirtualPC supports 32 bit clients only, even with a 64 bit host and virtualization.

but I do not have the Hyper-V option in Windows programs and features.


virtualbox virtualization worked perfectly on my pc until a few months ago !

As LMiller7 pointed out in post #2 your CPU does not support virtualization and that is the reason it doesn't appear in your BIOS. VirtualBox requires VT-x to run a 64-bit client OS. Also, Hyper-v is not supported in any version of Windows 7.

It probably worked a few months ago because you were using a 32-bit version, which IS supported.

it works with VMware! I have a 64-bit ubuntu virtualization that runs on this machine with VMware!
