Good evening,

Background information:

Anyone who has been reading my recent threads will see that I have been trying to come up with a way to create a new install.wim that will be used to create a new ISO for a clean install.

Well, I have so far managed to create a Batch file that automatically integrates the 4 Windows updates that MUST be installed FIRST:

KB3020369 - Servicing Stack Update - April 2015.
KB3125574 - Convenience Rollup Package - May 2016.
KB3172605 - Functional Update Rollup (THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT) - July 2016.
KB3179573 - Functional Update Rollup - August 2016.

...followed by either the latest Cumulative KB4088875 Security Monthly Quality Rollup Update for March 2018, or the 17 Security-Only updates from KB3192391 (October 2016) to KB4088878 (March 2018).

This bit is done and fine.

Reason for this thread:

This brings me back to the topic and the reason for this particular thread. I refer back to KB3125574, the Convenience Rollup Package above. On two other threads on this forum where information was given by Marie SWE with her excellent "Marie's be aware of KB-list":

Here is my version of "be aware of list"..
It's KB's both for telemetry, Win10 related and some just a little naughty and can mess with the computer.

..and by Brds7t7 who said...

You can't skip some of the telemetry updates if you install the convenience update though, some are integrated into it. I know the CEIP ones are (KB3080149 for example).

With this in mind I thought that I would try and find out what updates were actually included in the KB3125574 and found these two sites below that had this information:

https://dimitri.janczak.net/2017/06/29/updates-included-kb-3125574/

https://www.askvg.com/install-all-p...n-windows-7-using-convenience-rollup-package/

I have compiled the table below that uses the information from BOTH of the sites above and shows the differences:

KB3125574 - Convenience Rollup Package Table..jpg

Question:

Does anyone know if any of the information in the table above is incorrect because it either includes updates that are not included in KB3125574 or are missing updates that should be included in KB3125574 please?

This is the first part. I will post a second part depending on the answers I receive here where I have taken information provided by Marie SWE and MeOnMine with regard to updates to avoid because of telemetry etc and applied them to the table above. In the second part I will also list the updates that I have highlight because of telemetry etc and the reasons why they were flagged.

I will first wait for any input and comments on the table I compiled above first though.

Thanks in advance.

Hello again. :D

The only problem I see with KB3125574 is that there are no official specifications about what KB's are included in this(which I can find). So if someone wants to avoid telemetry remote desktop, win10 related and some other features that are completely irrelevant to that person/country, then it will be difficult.
I have tried to read on MS page and opened what it contains. But there are way too many files that I do not have a clue about what they really are for. So I can not come up with a good and fact-based opinion.
I myself have avoided it because of the uncertainty of what it contains. So I install update for update instead.

Not a good answer perhaps , but my little opinion. ;)
Best regards Marie

Thanks for the reply iko22,

The convenience update contains these KB's : View attachment 403233
That's brilliant.
That exactly ties up with the data from askvg.
The Microsoft list is slightly wrong because they have included KB2846960 TWICE in their list.

Thanks in advance.

Good afternoon,

As promised here is the second part which is a list of ALL the updates included in KB3125574 directly from Microsoft.

Out of the 122 updates included in KB3125574 I ran the lists that have been provided and posted by Marie SWE and MeOnMine against them and I have come up with the following.

View attachment MS & Telemetry.docx

As you can see there are 33 that contain potential threats.

So my second question is, what updates are SAFE to include and which updates are definately UNSAFE and should be excluded please?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

I have just looked through the updates on the Microsoft Update Catalog site and there are a lot that aren't for Windows 7 at all, but instead for XP, Vista, Server, R8, Windows 8 etc.

Out of the 89 NOT highlighted in Yellow in my attachement there are only 45 which are relevant. Does this mean that I can IGNORE any non Windows 7 updates in KB3125574.

The KB3020369 servicing stack update is obsolete as it is replaced by a newer update - KB3177467.

So install the KB3177467 Servicing Stack September 2016 update first, before any other update.

Also the KB3172605 update was revised on September 2016 and the revised ones are found on MS Update Catalog.

Hi erpster4, thanks for the reply,

So install the KB3177467 Servicing Stack September 2016 update first, before any other update.
This is true, BUT, if you want to include the KB3125574 - Convenience Rollup Package - May 2016, you need the KB3020369 update and NOT the KB3177467 update.

Also the KB3172605 update was revised on September 2016 and the revised ones are found on MS Update Catalog.
That appears to be the same!

I will just add that this topic is related to the inclusion of updates needed that will be included in an updated install.wim file, i.e. offline integration.

Good evening,

I have done some more work and have compiled the following with a legend at the top:

View attachment Conv Updates Yes Or No.docx

Any feedback will be appreciated as to which of the 122 updates should be included and which should NOT.

These are AFTER the update: KB3020369 - Servicing Stack Update - April 2015, and BEFORE KB3172605 - Functional Update Rollup (THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT) - July 2016 and KB3179573 - Functional Update Rollup - August 2016.

These are obviously PRIOR to either the Security-Only or Security Monthly Quality Rollups.

Thanks in advance.

Good afternoon,

I have updated the previous file posted with the hope that it will make it clearer to understand. I have included a legend at the top for reference:

If you want to make W7 SP2 you need to install KB3020369 & kb3125574-v4 aka "Convenience rollup update", but to show it in prefs you need to make something like this:

Changing Service Pack Level from Registry (after rollup-update installed):
Quote:
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: system\CurrentControlSet\control\windows
Name: CSDVersion
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0x200 = SP2

For W7 updates for example use Simplix UpdatePack 7.

luk3z/VolumeZ:

This thread is 3-1/2 years old, so your comments no longer apply.

After you do a clean install of Windows 7 SP1, all you need to do is deploy the current version of Simplix UpdatePack7R2.

It will bring Windows 7 SP1 up to date to October 2021.

No pre-requisite updates are needed after doing a clean install.

regarding KB3125574 in general, some mobo makers like ASRock (with their X470 Taichi motherboard) have certain Win7 device driver downloads (esp. the AMD all-in-one VGA/graphics driver, Intel bluetooth drivers and Intel wireless LAN drivers) that do require the KB3125574 convenience rollup package installed first

AMD all in 1 with VGA driver ver:17.40.2815.1010_WHQL
*Windows update and Microsoft hotfix KB3125574 are required for this driver

so the KB3125574 rollup is needed in some situations
