Strange Black Screen Issue on login

I have been reading through the threads here but can't find a situation like mine.

I am running win 7 pro on a clean setup for about a month. No new SW added anytime recently. I boot up and the PC goes black, no cursor or anything through win login.

It comes back if I RIGHT CLICK the mouse and shows the rt click menu on desktop. If I open a window, any window, it will operate normally. As soon as I close the window, black screen until I right click again.

I have tried to boot in safe mode but as soon as I hit F8 then F12 (Dell) it goes black until I get back to my dark desktop again.

I have gone into the Task Mgr and Processes to look for anything odd, but nothing unusual. I also uninstalled/reinstalled my video drivers but no joy. I have a brand new (3 weeks old) GTX 1050 TI which has been running everything nicely.

This is the strangest thing I've ever seen.

Thoughts?

Hi pmcdn welcome to the Forum.

Try removing the GTX 1050 graphics card, clean the contacts on it & the ones on the motherboard, then carefully push it back into position making sure it is fully seated right across & then secure it with the screw, making sure the metal bracket is aligned with the case so that it does not pull the card out again.

Don't forget to release the plastic clip at the far end before removing it when you statrt.

Oh, you so rock! Thank you, that did the trick.

What causes this to occur or how can I prevent this in the future?

A bad connection can occur at any time. Graphic cards are quite long & there are very many connecting points & only one has to be a bit iffy & it can cause a problem. You will know what to look for next time it happens. It has happened to me a on a few occasions.

Anyway, glad to hear it fixed the problem & you are welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is the problem. It has resumed as of today. I removed the GPU again, cleaned the connectors and re-installed. No joy.

Frustrating!

Have you had a look in Device Manager to see if you have any yellow flashes?. Have you tried changing any settings in the NVIDIA control panel. If you Right Click on the Desktop you should see NVIDIA Control Panel, click on that & check all the settings, you can also reset it to the Default settings if you wish.

The things that you should look at are refresh rate & the colour settings. Also are you letting NVIDIA control the monitor or are you using the monitor settings. I use the NVIDIA settings as they are easier to adjust.& this can be found in the Adjust Desktop Colour Settings & then Choose How Colour is Set & clicking on the NVIDIA button, you can then change the colour settings.

Only clicking the right mouse button has any effect (not the keyboard or left mouse button)?
