While you are in the Add printer Wizard, select Windows update. It will take upwards of 10 minutes for an updated list to appear. During this time the window will appear frozen, it is not. There is a driver for HP 8400 series.
Welcome to the Windows 7 support forum.I am now a proud owner of windows seven and a HP Photosmart 8400 that HP chooses not to make drivers for. Any suggestions?
Joe, were you provided an install disk?Adrian,
I have a Dell laptop inspiron 1720. Original OS was Windows Vista. The printer is a HP Photosmart 8450.
This printer was working fine with the vista OS. I then did an upgrade with 7, when the problem occurred. My printer is a wireless connect. I went to the HP site where they said a driver upgrade was not available The instructions were to bypass this by just going to "file" and print from the pull down menu. This didn't work either.
I also did the add printer and getting the software from MS, that didn't seem to work either.
All connections are unchanged. The only thing different/new is the OS change.
Thanks again!
Joe D.

Good morning Joe, since you have a printer install disk with available drivers I suggest the following steps.
After you finish let us know how it went.
- Remoce the printer from your system., since its not physically attached power the printer off.
- Remove all HP drivers /uninstall the printer from device manager, take out any HP programs using the control panel/add-remove programs.
- Reboot the system
- Insert the HP installation disk, do not autorun.
- Open the installation disk and find setup.exe, right click and view the drop down menu, you will see somthing called view compatability, click on it. Windows 7 will scan it and suggest either Vista, Xp compatability setting. Use the vista. Go up the menu and you will see an option calles "Run as Administartor". Left click on that option.
- The installation should now start.
- When the prompt tells you to turn on the printer power it up.
- Windows should complete the installation.
