"Server Busy" Message may be tied to .NET Framework installation?

Received a dialog box that will not go away: Server Busy - "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'switch to' to activate the busy program and correct the problem".

This message began appearing right after I installed the Garmin GPS update software that required Microsoft's .NET Framework 4.7.2 installation.

Now, I am unable to start any programs on my computer (Windows 7, 64-bit). Furthermore, I am not able to run any command prompts or diagnostic tools that require my clicking "Start" and then entering a name -- the cursor just sits there motionless! I've tried clicking on the "Switch To..." and "Retry" button within the offending dialog box many many times, but to no avail. I've opened Task Manager and highlighted the "Server Busy" line and clicked "End Task". While the line item disappears, the problems with running programs and the like continues!

I've attempted to download "NetFxRepairTool.exe" from Microsoft, that is supposed to help troubleshoot common issues with the setup of .NET Framework, but it will not download.

I have successfully (once that is) opened a Command Prompt window in hopes of running "sfc /scannow". However, I received the message that I was not an administrator, which I am for this PC.

The computer exhibits bizarre behavior also - it will let me play videos from the HDD or from YouTube, but there will be no volume. I can browse the Internet just fine. I can open Windows Explorer. But I can not open any programs nor execute any "Start" commands. Everything just hangs up. I can not start any programs from the "Start" menu, however I can start them (most of them) from the desktop shortcut that may have been created previously. That said, the "Server Busy" dialog box re-appears whenever I open Adobe Lightroom 5, which I've had on my computer for years without issue. I truly believe that the problem lies with the recent installation of the MS .NET Framework which blends itself into the operating system and cannot simply be removed like any other program.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated -- my apologies if the above text is a little jumbled.

Welcome to the forum. In order to run SFC you must right click on CMD.com and choose run as administrator it will then work see what that says then check hd for errors

SFC

I am unable to find "CMD.com" under Start... I found CMD.exe which opened up the Command Prompt window. But running SFC without admin rights wasn't working the last time I tried.

I have removed all external peripheral devices except for the LAN line, monitors, mouse, and keyboard. Yet, the problem persists no matter which program I attempt to run ("Server Busy"). That said, I am able to work within Windows Explorer and browse the internet with Chrome and IE. Whenever, I open the Control panel and select a command, the mouse spinner just spins endlessly. Same with the Start menu commands.

Also, I am not able to shut the computer down using the Start menu - I must to do an Alt/Ctl/Del and use the red icon button in the bottom right-hand corner.

Pressing F8 to get to the "Safe Mode" only brings up the ASUS UEFI BIOS settings screen. I've tried this many times at various intervals with no success.

Any further suggestions on what has been offered up or on any new ones would be greatly appreciated!

(1) Click Start.
(2) In the search box type cmd.
(3) Right-click the cmd icon from the search results under Programs and select Run as administrator.
(4) The elevated command prompt window will now open.

System File Checker (SFC)

After much tinkering, my computer desktop went completely black -- no task bar, and no start menu. The only things that were open was Explorer and an Internet Browser. After some more research, I learned that you could enter "Safe Mode" by powering down the computer while it shuts down. The next time you start the computer (power up), the option to enter Safe Mode appears! This is great news to me since pressing F8 only brought up the Asus BIOS settings screen. Anyway, I'm in safe mode and opened a Command Prompt as an administrator. I then issued the command "SFC /scannow" -- the computer is scanning all system files currently.

Meanwhile, I was on the phone line with a Microsoft rep a couple of days ago to see what, if anything, they could do to help -- they couldn't! I was not able to provide them with my 25-digit product key, since my computer wasn't cooperating. He suggested that I buy a Windows 7 disk from a reputable dealer and do a fresh install --- very helpful stuff! Anyway, fearing the worst, I purchased a new Windows 7 disk from Walmart for $170 (64-bit, SP1, OEM). Should be here today. We'll see what the results of the SFC scan look like and go from there... results are in and the CBS.log states at the bottom of the very long file that "all files and registry keys listed in this transaction have been successfully repaired". I closed all open windows and rebooted my computer normally. Logged on and the desktop populated normally. Opened Chrome browser -- computer sitting idly at this time. Will come back here and provide an update shortly...

If you want to find your Product Key for the version of Windows that you are running [assuming that you computer is running OK now], then you can retrieve it by either using Belarc Advisor or Magic Jelly Bean. Write this Product Key down and keep it in a safe place.

He suggested that I buy a Windows 7 disk from a reputable dealer and do a fresh install --- very helpful stuff! Anyway, fearing the worst, I purchased a new Windows 7 disk from Walmart for $170 (64-bit, SP1, OEM). Should be here today.

If we can get this sorted for you then there may be no need for a fresh install. There is also an option available where you can do a repair install. A repair install differs from a clean install in the fact that it ONLY replaces the corrupted OS with a new fresh copy. This means that ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs are left intact. It does however, delete ALL the Window updates, and can affect, sounds, services, visual effect settings and device drivers by re-setting them to default. You cannot do a repair install at boot, in Safe Mode, using a system repair disk, or using an integrated Windows update disk. Basically, this process can ONLY be performed from within the LIVE OS.

We'll see what the results of the SFC scan look like and go from there... results in and the CBS.log states at the bottom of the very long file that "all files and registry keys listed in this transaction have been successfully repaired". I closed all open windows and rebooted my computer normally. Logged on and the desktop populated normally. Opened Chrome browser -- computer sitting idly at this time. Hi Bugetboy,

got a suggestion for you

Click on the turn features on/off (top left) on the programs and features panel
select Netframework 3.5, enable HTTP and HTTPS


REBOOT

If that doesn't help, try uninstalling/reinstalling Garmin, it has been known for it to cause problems


Send that W7 disc back to Walmart, you dont need it as Paul said ALL of your product keys/licences will be listed in the Belarc report.
Once you get your product key, which should be either System builder or Retail
You can download W7 Pro SP1 from MS if its Retail or Heidoc if System builder
i can check if you run the tool from here copy/paste the output
