Copy of Windows 7 suddenly became non-genuine.

Today, my copy of Windows 7 suddenly became non-genuine. I made no modifications to the hardware.

I bought a new key but it won't work. I am unable to go online to resolve the issue. The option to "Go online and resolve now" leads me to a Page Not Found.

I don't know what else I can do. I have no idea where I can find a legit Windows 7 Home Premium key.
I thought the one I just bought was legit since the site I bought it from had a Microsoft Partners Network sticker.

i can tell you that the key was lifted from a COA sticker, and would be genuine on a factory pre-installed W7 machine, it was taken from.

The reason its gone non-genuine on yours
Your machine doesnt have certain OEM details, as such you will need either a System Builder or Retail key

Suggest you contact them and demand a refund, i'm quite happy for you to link this to them.

On a further note you could contact MS, they might feel generous and offer you a key, likely W10,

I won't be able to use my computer until I have one.

I don't want to upgrade to Windows 10 and have to erase everything I already have installed just to install the OS.

slmgr.vbs /upk

It will remove the product key from your computer

This does NOT mean you cannot use your machine, it puts it into a grace period of 90 days
(non-genuine will dissappear)


After the 90 period you can get upto another 120 days of grace

slmgr /rearm and hit enter.

I would suggest that you do not commit yourself to any new financial outlay for a key, of course investigate the possibility of obtaining a key from Newegg, but it's probably best to wait to see if Microsoft provide any assistance, in the 90 Day period, before ordering anything.

just curious what happened to your old key or were you running a linux distro.

AS an experiment
If you have the old code, change it to that via control panel >> System -- change product key
REBOOT TWICE

rerun the Mgdiag tool and post the results.

Now Windows won’t start up on my computer. I am able to get into Startup repair but then my mouse and keyboard stop working and I am unable to use a System Restore.

I gave my desktop machine to a friend who works in IT and somehow he activated Windows with working key.

The computer booted and ran fine after I plugged it back in. However, given the previous startup failure, I’m not certain that my computer is back to normal yet. I must wait and see if it boots up and runs fine tomorrow.

I don’t know what he did. I just know he was able to boot up Windows without a problem and input a working key.

I don’t know why starting up Windows failed that one time. Sure, Windows booted up fine this morning and didn’t take more than a minute, but I wonder if startup failure could happen again.

I'm pretty sure slmgr rearm gives you 30 days * 4 = 120 total, not 90 days + another 120

What torchwood is saying is that you initially get a 90 day grace period. After the 90 days grace period you can use the 4 rearms at 30 days each. This is 90 days [grace period] + 4 [rearms] x 30 [rearm period] = 210 days!

I've been reading this thread, and it makes me so angry. People sell "keys" like water. Does the "4" mean s/he can get grace periods 4 times?

NewEgg is honest. Last time I looked, a few months ago, MicroCenter was selling keys + disc too.
