Solved Headphones not being recognised on re-connection.

Hi davethurston,

Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties and make sure that it is set as the default playback device.

Click Start => Control Panel => Sound => Playback Devices tab.

after downloading the two files from the sociologness site, malwarebytes detected 146 threats and windows defender found two viruses. i don't think i'll go near that site again.

in terms of playback devices, the loudspeaker is (as it always has been) the default device. no mention as always of headphones as a device

Hi davethurston,

[1] I noticed from you specifications that your laptop is a Delium v10IS2, is that correct?
[2] Did it come with a Drivers DVD?
[3] If it was a brand name, I could look for you and get you the latest official sound drivers!
[4] Do you know exactly what sound card is installed?

Hi PB
Answers in order:
1 correct
2 No it didn't which is why I downloaded all available drivers from the ECS website when I got the Netbook.
ECS EliteComputerSystems made Deliums. Audio driver was one of them, for both XP and w7. I've tried both.
3 It wasn't a brand name in terms of dell,hp,acer etc but if you can find later official drivers, yes please.
It was bought from Comet who you might recall folded years ago.
4 No, I am not sure what the sound card is exactly. I assume its onboard audio as opposed to separate board.
The official audio driver downloads I have only identifies it as Reallusion Virtual Audio or Realtek High Def Audio.

Don't forget, those same drivers work fine on the other machine.... headphones switching on/off as normal.
TIA

Three suggestions . . .

First . . .

[1] Click Start => Device Manager.
[2] Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
[3] =>

Right-click High Definition Audio Device =>
Click Update Driver Software =>
Click Search automatically for updated driver software =>
Click Yes, search online this time only.

Second . . .

[1] Click Start => Device Manager.
[2] Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
[3] Right-click High Definition Audio Device => Uninstall => OK.
[4] Restart the computer [
it will automatically reinstall the driver].

Third . . .

Download the Realtek HD Audio Driver from here => Download Realtek HD Audio Drivers.

I hope this helps!

Hi PB
I've tried all three of your suggestions, letting it update driver, letting it reinstall driver and trying realtek v2.82.
No joy with any version.
It's a PITA but I think I'm going to have to reinstall win7 from scratch, just to get headphones working again.
Unless anyone knows of registry fixes...

Hi davethurston,

It's a PITA but I think I'm going to have to reinstall win7 from scratch, just to get headphones working again.

If it comes to that, you DON'T need to reinstall [clean install] Win 7, you can perform a Repair Install . . .

A repair install differs from a clean install in the fact that it ONLY replaces the corrupted OS with a new fresh copy. This means that ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs are left intact. It does however, DELETE ALL the WU's [Window updates] installed, and could possibly affect, sounds, services, visual effect settings and device drivers by re-setting them to default [unusual though]. You CANNOT do a repair install at boot, in Safe Mode, using a system repair disk, or using an integrated Windows update disk. Basically, this process can ONLY be performed from within the LIVE OS.

Unless anyone knows of registry fixes...

I will have a look into that for you later.

I hope this helps!

Dave-

Yeh, I got looking at the site and there were actually two drivers for Win 7 32 bit for the audio controller. Norton said both were unsafe and deleted each one after I downloaded it. Sorry about that.

wiki article for HDA - Intel High Def Audio has interesting comment :

------------------------------
Intel High Definition Audio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Realtek ALC 882 HD Audio Codec

Features of the specification include:[2]

Up to 15 input and 15 output streams
Up to 16 PCM audio channels per stream
Sample resolutions of 8–32 bits
Sample rates of 6–192 kHz
Support for audio codecs (e.g., ADC, DAC), modem codecs, and vendor-defined codecs
Discoverable codec architecture
Fine-grained codec power-control
Audio jack detection, sensing, and retasking

------------------

Last comment seems to say this audio driver is responsible (or not) for audio jack detection.

I'll think about repair install....

i think i'm just going to accept that headphones don't work on this machine
