worked yesterday - today won't boot

I'm running win7 pro on MSI MB model 970A-G43 64 bit. I don't recall the memory amount.

Yesterday the system worked fine. I leave it on a night. this morning I turned on the monitors and they showed the sysytem wouldn't boot.

I was unable to shut the system off with holding down the power button, so I turned off at the power switch and attempted to reboot. Got a 'no signal'

tried this several times with no luck.

put the boot drive into a USB case and plugged it into my windows laptop running 10 pro. went into disk management and the drive shows up as unallocated.........

I thought that was perhaps trying to see a win7 disk on windows 10 - so then plugged it into another win7 pro drive computer and it still showed as unallocated.

I know my MB is old. I think the battery may be failing since it didn't seem to register the correct time lately.

I checked out my graphics card - (dual card) and it worked.

it seems that the issue is with the hard drive.. Sandisk Ultra II 480 GB. SSD

I was hacked several years ago and a close friend helped me get my system going again, but in order to do that it took all night and I ended up with files all over the place. so when I would try to setup a backup schedule - it just never worked.

I also had installed a small software program that prevented win10 from updating. I didn't want to upgrade to 10 and this stopped the constant messaging. I don't recall what the software was. I finally caved and wanted to upgrade but wasn't sure it would work.

I bought a new SSD 1 TB and also the win10 pro software but can't get the USB with the software on it to be recognized. I don't recall how to get into the bios.

I have tons of info on the non-working drive that I need to get if possible. I'm hoping the MB didn't cause the crash.

Can someone help me thru this? I know just enough about working with computers to be dangerous. the newer systems seem to much more complicated since I put this one together years ago. So I need the kindergarten level help.

I know the info has to be on the drive - I just don't know how to get it back.

Do I have to purchase a new MB? or is this one salvageable until I can get one? Is there hope to get my files back?

do you have anything like macrium/aoemi/o & o on your system??

to open msi motherboard bios - its usually hitting the delete key at startup
and finally are you dual booting

I have the free verison of macrium on THIS system. I also have (somewhere) some Easus software but it's on the system that won't boot. I tried hitting delete but at this point can't bring anything up.

just got into the bios but couldn't get it to change to usb. I thought if I could install my windows 10 software- that would bide me some time.

your Easus program has recovery and partition options within it.
does it show as a bootable option in bios

your w7 (un-allocated on w10) does not appear to be correct it should also have a system reserved partition- allocate it a drive letter repost screenshot

I found another interesting thing while working on this. I periodically get -" reboot and use correct boot disk". I didn't have a boot disk to put in because I was just trying to check other things. If I hit 'reboot' it would not work. the power switch did work to restart but then neither monitor would come up. I have had to turn the system off at the power switch on the power supply because the power button on the front won't work. but the reset button did.

I unplugged the CD drive (not sure why - just trying stuff). but I was able to get into the bios but couldn't get it switched to read from anything.

I plugged the CD drive back in and put in my original win7 disk. within 2 minutes the computer shut down. still couldn't see anything on the monitor(s). tried several times and with the CD rom plugged in - the system shuts down. so I unplugged it again and the system will keep running...........

so now the power supply is coming in to question. the CD drive apparently is drawing too much power causing the system to shut down. it's a 700 watt PS.

I'm downloading the software you suggested but not sure how to use it. do I slave the non working drive to my windows 10 laptop? it probalby won't come up any other way.

I did hook up one of my monitors to the HDMI on my laptop and the monitor works fine.

there are so many things that could be causing the issue. is it possible the problem originated with a failing power supply? I may have another one I can plug in temporarily.

meanwhile I don't know where to start.........I can swap out a power supply or a graphics card - but I'm mostly concerned with getting my files off the dead drive.

sorry to be such a pain, but I'm not sure where to begin.

I"mnot sure what I"m supposed to do with the USB installer. the sound is so low I can't hear it what option do I choose?

again - sorry - just don't feel well and I've been tryint to get this thing to work since 5am and it's now after 6pm

I really need the kindergaten version.

I am unable to assign a drive letter to the non working unallocated drive. I have the option of creating a new simple volume. at that point I can 'mount' the drive or assign a letter. is that what I should be doing?

Clue is that the disk is reported as "unallocated". That probably means that the partition table has gone. You can repair a broken partition table via your Windows 10 machine. You will need to install some software called MiniTool Partition Wizard. Partition Wizard is available free to install, however, the Partition Table recovery feature that you will want, is only available on the paid version.

So, you need to do some heavy thinking and decide if the data is that important to you. Create a manual restore point on your Windows 10 computer, then decide if you want to install Partition Wizard. The link for it is here: MiniTool Partition Wizard .

That is all I can offer in terms of help. I do not know if Megahertz07 has any better ideas.

that at least gives me some hope. the tech support at Easeus is going to help me tonight at 8pm thru live chat, but here is my next question. if the partition tables may be the culprit - then that might explain why the data recovery software wasn't the answer?

I looked up the Minitool partition software and it is pricey. they should version 12 is the most recent, but I did find multiple copies of 9.1 on EBay for around $10 to $15. would you think those versions might work?

THe only other one I found was a Minitool wizard Enterprise v12 for windows 64 bit. that was around $20 which I would happily spend if it's the same one.

Yes it is pricey if you got only the one disk to recover. In which case it might be worthwhile contacting your local computer shop/repair shop and see if they offer the same service on the drive.
