I was recently infected with malware and I have worked with experts to clean the malware. Now, I can't update my Windows (there's a few other anomalies too). Eventually, I will reinstall Windows but for the time being, I'd like to remedy my issues at least partially and going about it piecemeal.
I tried the following links to no avail:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors and Solved: Windows update cannot currently check for updates in Windows 8, 7 or Vista - wintips.org - Windows Tips & How-tos

Any wisdom left here from the old Windows 7 days?

Oh,one more thing. I thought there was a file I could download that scans my updates and then provides me a list so I can download the updates manually. I can't seem to find the name of that file so I can't search for it online.

Easy Fix.

Repair Windows Without Reformatting.docx

After you Repair Install/In Place Upgrade, turn off Windows Update run UpdatePack7R2 to download an up to date Simplix file.
Simplix is a single file (880MB) that contain all updates since Win 7 released up to date. It has all security and non security updates without the trash (telemetry and tracking). Very good.
Then run WU manually to find updates for Office etc and decide which ones to install.

Recommended AV’s, malware scanner, adware scanner, pup scanners.docx

To uninstall the telemetry, run cmd file to uninstall those KB files.
kb_spy.cmd.txt
Rename it as KB_Spy.cmd and run it.

Hi Sammy,

rather neglet of the fixers not to help you restore missing WU components.

As @Snick said a repair install is the easiest way.

As you want to go the piecemeal route, there's a handy little program here
Download Windows Repair (All In One)

it can repair all sorts problems, including resetting permissions after infection.
provides a log as well which a repair install does not

have a look at the readme first.

In case this issue has persisted since early December 2017, i.e. no updates have been installed since, recovery may be as easy as turning it off and on again, i.e. setting Windows Update to "Never check for updates" and back.

Thanks, everyone, I'll give your ideas a try. From my experience though, Windows repair (without reformatting) never resolved any past issues.

Sammy888,

There is no windows update service that can be downloaded and installed, as far as I know & I've google it before without any results. The only way I know of fixing that is a Repair Install, which replaces Windows including the windows update service.

Repair Installs don't fix everything, it reinstalls Windows and fixes most if not all of the issues relating to the Operation System. If the issue is unrelated to the OS, it won't fix that.

Actually, there is in as much if you are able to connect to Windows Update through your Windows 7 device, it still provides missing updates.

The tool quoted and provide by F22 Simpilot seems to work really well. I checked everything even "fixes" related to Windows 10, and this little monster has remedied my Windows Update isssue. I have some other issues too like a third party firewall called Private Firewall managing to attach itself to many Windows services and files and it's blocked access to them because the message pop-up timed out or I selected by accident to disallow the process.

Overall, I'm quite impressed with the Windows Repair AIO Tool. I appreciate it being mentioned. I don't think it's worth buying the Pro version, but it certainly is quite powerful and I recommend it before trying to do a Windows Repair.

This is really alarming. You know you were infected and not reinstalled Windows? No expert will ever suggest that. Windows Update is the least of your problems right now, instead, focus on cleaning the infection properly by reformating the computer and doing a clean install to get rid of everything. Windows update will also begin to work as it should as a side effect.

Don't bother with anything else until you've fixed that.

Why did you "check" fixes for windows 10?
They don't apply to windows 10
