Hi Folks,

I had a strange thing happen the other day. I transferred all of my wife's photos to a USB Drive (it was only a few Gigs) when it finished things look great. Never expect that from Windows (currently Win 7 SP1) When I checked things out I noticed that all of her documents just disappeared from her Documents Folders.

I did the transfer to save space because her machine seems to be gobbling gigs for no reason. The sad part is that come to find out she only had about 4Gbs of photos on the darned thing:mad:

I sure hope someone can get me out of the HOT water I'm in.

Thanks in advice,
KAHSR

Did you highlight all the photos and use the Cut option?

It sounds like you may have inadvertently selected documents in addition to photos for the transfer. Were you just withen the confines of the My Pictures folder, or were you operating within the documents folder where documents and pictures resided?

About your data space issue, check out the program WinDirStat. WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics You can easily see what paths have the most junk and what data is consuming the most junk. Read what I said here about using Ccleaner and System Ninja.

It gets worse, when I looked at all of the file folders everyone of them was empty. I photo file did show up and could be seen but that was it out of well over 3500 folders. I noticed a few Doc folders/files all also empty or non-opening. I did find one folder had it's files in it which are viewable - go figure.

I did notice the the Drive is formatted as FAT32 my bad for not checking before using. I have another one I will be reformatting before using it.

I did not do your suggestions yet because of these new findings. Is there some other place they can be hiding?

A move is just like a cut. It has the inherit ability of corrupting the data on the source while in transit to the destination. This is due to many factors along the USB "pipe" so to speak. You should ALWAYS copy then paste files and then if you want delete the source files after the copy/paste maneuver.

You really only want to use a cut or move from withen hard drives only.

The disk may be dying.

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk C: /f
It will say your disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next start = yes
Restart
Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc
