Hard Drive problem - 0x8007045D I/O Device Error

I am having a problem with (what I think) one of my hard disks (the data disk). All of a sudden it has become very slow and some files cannot be accessed. Opening a folder can take a long time. Problems opening, deleting or copying some files. Trying to copy some files results in the 0x8007045D I/O Device Error. Other files can be opened fine.

The device manager reports the drive as working OK. I've rebooted the computer and also removed the disk and put it back, but it didn't help. Tried to run a scan to check for bad sectors, etc. but it was extremely slow, and I had to quit. Checked for viruses and malware, there doesn't seem to be any.

This is happening only with the data disk. The system disk (which is a separate physical disk), as well as removable file storage media are working fine. My data disk is a HDD and is less than 4 years old.

Does it look like the hard disk is faulty and simply needs replacing or do I need to check for anything else (before I spend the money and time on replacing it)?

Thank you

I would try to connect this drive onto another computer just to make sure the problem persist. In which case it would be a strong indication that your drive is loosing some sectors and will shortly become totally unreliable.

On the contrary, if your drive, on another computer, behave normally then you will have to investigate other avenues.

But, from what you are describing, although not a certainty, it very much sounds like a bad hard drive that will shortly become more bad. Time to invest for a new drive, I guess.

Lets do the basic.

Logical Disk check
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
chkdsk x: /f (replace x with the data drive letter)

Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

To see the SMART status of the drive, download, extract and run CrystalDiskInfo It is a portable, don't need to be installed.

HardDisk Sentinel is another very good utility, just like CrystalDiskInfo. I hope you have current restorable full images or folders/files backups of your OS partitions and your data partition on external media - before this situation began.

OK, so I am getting LOADS of unreadable file record segments. After the first couple of thousands, most sectors are reported as unreadable. And the scan is running extremely slowly (this is what was also happening when I tried to run a similar utility from under Windows). My calculations show that it would take me close to 6 months to complete the first stage of the chkdsk scan. So, naturally, I quit.

So if I am getting this many unreadable file record segments, is it safe to assume it's the hard disk fault? I still don't understand why they all have become unreadable all of a sudden at the same time.

Luckily, my system is on a separate physical drive, which is a SSD and hence much more reliable. I do have a back up of my data, except for one file, which I need (but not a disaster).

Did you run CrystalDiskInfo?
It seems your drive is almost dead.

If you're replacing the drive, If less than a T, buy a SSD. If you want one bigger than 2T buy a first grade HDD.
Have used many BX500. So far so good
HGST (Hitachi) are the most used on data centers
I have one WD Gold . So far so good.

I've run CrystalDiskInfo. It says the disk health status is Caution. This is all I can understand.

My laptop is kinda old. It's very sturdy, has good specs, and I've chosen it specifically so I can replace parts myself, even though I am not that technical. But I am not sure how long it will last without completely failing or becoming totally obsolete - maybe another couple of years? And they don't make these things anymore. The modern laptops and even desktops are all sealed boxes. I wouldn't go in poking inside. So maybe it doesn't make sense to buy an expensive HD.

You have a very good laptop. Just pay attention on the temperatures as the heat sink gets dusty.
My suggestion is to use Open hardware monitor . Extract to a folder and run. You can set to start with windows. Very good.

I thought you have a desktop, that is why I suggested the 3.5" HDD. Sorry.
HGST (Hitachi) 2.5"

As you said, not easy or cheap to buy a good laptop. And a new one comes with Win 10 that is hard to swallow.
I would buy a drive replacement.
In the future, if you decide to buy a new computer, you can place the drive (HDD or SSD) on a USB caddy.

Yes, I did my research before purchasing it. I bought it 4 years ago, decommissioned by some government department and refurbished, at a fraction of the price. I've been using it for 4 years now with some minor part replacements (so overall it's about 7 years old). The previous laptop I bought new for the same amount of money, and it completely fell apart after 3 years. Couldn't be fixed, or rather wasn't worth it.

I wouldn't call it a 'laptop' exactly as it weighs a few kilos. )) You wouldn't take it to a coffee shop. But you can take it in a car or on a plane, and at the time I planned to go travelling. It is also very serviceable.

But every time I ring HP for support, they are telling me my laptop is very old, and I need to buy a new one. I say, nah, I like this one. ))

I will look into the hard disks, thank you.

Need more help please

So I have bought a Hitachi 2.5" internal HHD for my laptop on eBay. It arrived this week, but when I unpacked it, I saw that it came without the cover (or case, or whatever it's called), so I can't connect it to my laptop. I could have reused the cover from the old drive, but am unable to undo the screws on the casing; plus, I have lost some of the screws that fit the whole thing into place when removing it from the laptop.

When I bought my old drive on eBay the last time, it came enclosed in the case and with the screws to put it in place. It didn't even occur to me that this might not be standard, and that the drives could be sold without the case cover.

I looked on eBay and the internet in general to buy the casing, but all I can find are external caddies. The problem is I don't know what it's called. I tried searching for internal case, internal enclosure, internal cover, internal tray, etc. but can't find anything.

What I need is very similar to the thing shown through this link. I found this one accidentally on eBay, but firstly, I am not sure it's exactly what I need, that is if it would fit the secondary drive slot on my laptop (although it looks very similar to my old one) and secondly, it's shipped from China with the arrival date well into August, and I can't wait that long. It also looks like it doesn't have the screws to attach it in place. Can I buy the screws separately somewhere? It's proving to be a headache.

What is this thing called and where can I buy it (with the screws)?
