Solved Hear landline ring through laptop?

This is going to sound weird but. . .

Is it possible to direct my landline telephone ring through my laptop – not make calls but simply hear the phone ring? I have a music room where we play through mixers to headphones. When playing (drumming in particular) I do not hear the phone when it rings. I do have an external speaker and LED light that flashes when a call comes in but I have still missed a few calls. Is it possible to have a “ring” sounded through my laptop then directed through the mixer to my headphones?

Thanks,
Steve K.

Thank you Roland. I guess that would work but not really what I had in mind. What I was hoping for was a way to directly plug in a phone line to laptop USB or something similar. Apparently that's not possible. Ow well, no harm in dreaming. . .

Again, my thanks Roland,
Steve K.

You'll want to use this software and a good, reputable (and probably over priced) Caller-ID capable dial-up modem like this one. (Fake Spot review grade). (Data sheet) eBay options.

Higher quality useful for POS (Point Of Sale).

Specs.

eBay options.

Review grade.

POS (Point Of Sale) actually uses dial-up to charge your debt/credit card. In some cases it uses very slow, high latency satellite thus the reason for mess ups and slow response times at the cash register.

I run a similar setup myself with a caller-ID capable dial-up modem connected to the landline. The computer is a Dell Mini 910 netbook that runs 24/7. It's been running for at least six years now and I've had to replace its finite write capability flash HDD twice since then. I do clone it though so replacing the HDD is not an issue. I wrote about that here. The only difference is that I use a paid for software called PhoneTray. I also use Nomorobo to have a double firewall on the landline. https://www.nomorobo.com/ Their App has bad reviews I guess. Do you use Ooma? You'll need their paid for service for Nomorobo capability.

In the SIP department, I found what looks like a great SIP (Season Initiation Protocol) provider and if memory serves offers DiDs (Direct Inward Dialing). So long Skype!

Anyway... LOL

That looks like a clone of a modem I had that didn't work really well. Like I said:

and a good, reputable (and probably over priced) Caller-ID capable dial-up modem

U.S. Robotics has been the mainstay for dial-up modems for years, and that high grade version there is meant for POS so I'd be inclined to getting that one. I saw it was around $15 or so on eBay.

Customers experience good results with US Robotics controller-based modems.

For Example:

External serial modems:
USR5686G (56K - listed under both consumer and business class)
USR3453C or current model 5686G-PRO - this is their Courier line - 56K business/enterprise modem

Internal modems:
USR5610C (56k - listed as a Pro model & business class modem)

USB modems:
USR5637 (56K - listed under both consumer and business class)

InfoRad Wireless Solutions

The 5637 is what I pointed out. This is a controller based modem and its firmware is upgradeable or downgradable. Please read the datasheet I linked to.

EssKayKay -- make sure that any 56K modem you purchase has the built-in ability to change the IRQ it needs. I'm a Windows 7 user, so I do not know Windows 10, however, my back-then WinModem captured the IRQ I needed for another device, and neither the WinModem nor the other device was IRQ-adjustable.

Again, thank you Roland. I ordered an elCheapo model from Walmart. I hope it does what I want which really isn't much. All I need is for the modem to recognize an incoming call and sound an alert so I can hear it through my headphones while I am drumming. I have no plans to place a call, receive a all, send a fax, or anything else. Just hopefully it will trigger some sound when a call comes in. If it doesn't work I can return it.

Again my thanks - I'll keep you posted. . .

Just one more question if you please.

I downloaded SmartCallMonitor. After a bit of setup I got this working marginally. As checked "On" in setup, it does briefly trigger a computer system sound when a call comes in but not a reoccurring ring (i.e., trigger a sound with each ring prior to answer). The brief sound is too short to be distinguishable while monitoring music and drumming. Is this possible with SCM to trigger a lasting ring not the brief computer system sound?

Thanks,
Steve K.

Hey Roland,

Well, after numerous failed attempts to get an external USB modem to do what I wanted I decided go the low tech route as you suggested. I placed a small microphone next an external phone ringer amp – then ran the mic cable to a separate channel on my mixer. Not really what I wanted but it works.

Thanks all. . .

You bought the wrong modem. I said two or three times to get this or this US Robotics modems. Why? Because they can intercept Caller ID, i.e, Bell 202 modulation. What modem did you buy?

To answer the SmartCallMonitor question, I don't use it as I said I use the paid for PhoneTray for my needs, but when I read over the SmartCallMonitor features, it appears you can pick any Windows sound for the alert. So knowing this, I can make you a sound file that'll last some 30 seconds or longer if need be and you can direct SmartCallMonitor to that sound file to use for incoming calls.

Now remember when I said you can get these US Robotics modems on eBay cheaper than Amazon? Well, I bought two the moment I made my post here one week ago post number 4. They do work. How much were they? About 15 smackers a piece. Hell if I was paying $60 for a freaking cheap circuit board for 1990's tech.

It shouldn't be an issue without an eBay account either. I think they (eBay) allows you to check out as a guest using a debt/credit card. Don't have one? Go to the store and get a pre-paid Visa debt card. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=usr5637&_sacat=0

WOW – sorry. I surely didn’t mean to trigger a response like this.

I did get SmartCallMonitor to generate a one time computer system sound as noted just not the sound of a telephone ringing through the headphones for each ring from the phone as I hoped for. The “low-tech” option of simply placing a cheap microphone next to an external ringer, then directing it through the mixer is working fine. I understand this is not what I originally asked for but then again I really didn’t know exactly what I wanted or how to proceed.

Again, so sorry to upset you. I really didn’t intend to do so. My sincere apologies,
Steve K.
