Good day fellow Windows 7 users.

To make the long story short I did a clean install of Windows 7 pro x64 service pack 1 using a genuine microsoft dvd on my brother's thinkpad w510 which came with a win 7 pro and a win 10 product key (he bought it refurbished in 2017). Previously the laptop was running win 10, however in 2017 when he got it I tried his product key on mine win 7 pro installed from the same dvd and it activated it (afterwards I reentered my own key and didn't think of it until yesterday). Now when I did the installation and connected it to the internet instead of activating I got a series of error codes.(something to do with not being able to connect to internet although I had internet)
I also tired reinstalling the windows using a usb, Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool and a .iso from here: Windows 7 Professional 32/64-bit ISO Download - 2021 Softlay. Again after installation and connecting to internet it stated: 3 days until automatic activation. Activate windows now. And I got error codes (0x80072F8F) again after entering the key. I then tried the phone activation to no avail (I told the 9 sets of numbers to the operator), the microsoft operator kindly suggesting that the key which I have tested to be working is now somehow invalid.

(During the installation both times I typed the same product key, however I wasn't connected to the internet since I had no drivers.)

I would like to know if the product key truly is invalid, if that's so then why. Is it possible to "test" a product key like I did in 2017 or did that "spoil" it? Is microsoft still activating new win 7 installations if so have any of you done so in 2021?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Does it matter if I use the dvd or usb for the installation?

doesnt matter. skip entering the product key. then run 7oeminstaller after you get to the desktop.

I am assuming the media you have already includes SP1.

If not, it is best to get an iso that does.

Yup it does. Should I install the internet drivers before running the program?

Thank you very much sir my windows is now activated! Although I still don't understand why the other key didn't work. If it's not too much could you please explain how this process worked?

If the machine has a bios marker that entitles it to run win7, it performs what you can think of as a handshake. It is the method used by the major oems for win7.

I see and what about the code from the sticker?

Maybe because you used it on a different machine. Usually a call to the ms freefone will sort that out. I dont know why you had difficulty with it. Unless that same key is also in use elsewhere.
