I just had to share this. As a result of my Win 8.1 cratering on me yet again after an update I decided to boot on back to my Win 7 Ultimate. Like an old war bride faithfully waiting for me to come home she booted up without issue and worked like a charm. So I thought I'd check to see if she still had it in her to keep up the pace on the vintage hardware I use and this is what I got:

Did you use Simplix to update Win 7?

No, for some reason it just keeps on updating and working very efficiently.

Windows update will only update till end of support (January 14, 2020) and install the tracking files.
Simplix is up to date (use M$ extended support) and don't have tracking features. Very good.
You should follow the instructions on the first post .

It's nearly 2023 and I still get Windows updates on my Windows 7 Ultmate 64 bit OS. When these cease I will consider your advice. Until then I think I will just follow the old "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule.

Yes, you will get updates released till January 14, 2020 but won't get the updates released in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Am I missing something? Why am I still getting updates in 2022 if I only get updates till January 14 2020? Are you suggesting that all the updates that I got before then are being re-updated in 2022? :sarc:

Load the Windows Update app, then click "View update history".

Does it show installed Security Monthly Quality Rollup and Security And Quality Rollup entries with dates after 2020-01(January 2020) and up to 2022-12(December 2022)?

Windows 7 SP1 was released on October 22, 2009. Many updates were released on the following years. The updates you're receiving are updates released from October 22, 2009 till January 14 2020. Some of them became obsolete and were updated, more than once, with a new version. M$ released those updates, for general public, till January 14 2020. After January 14 2020 M$ released updates only for those who has bought the Extended Security Updates (ESU) .

If you haven't acquired the ESU you won't receive updates released in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
On a new installation like yours, if you leave WU active:
- You will have many updates over obsolete previous updates filling your computer and register with trash.
- You will have installed many tracking files.
Then it comes the single file Simplix with all updates (but only the last released update), updates released in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and no tracking.
Did you get it now?

Sort of. Is there a way to check to see if I have ESU? There is a chance that I might have that as I vaguely recall making a purchase for something like that a couple of years back. Then again. I may have already done the Simplex thing as that page looks familiar too.

No. Not yet. I am very careful about what I download from links. I'm on a different OS right now and it takes a bit to boot to Windows 7 from where I am currently. Because I am still receiving Windows updates on Windows 7 I am in no rush. I find Bel Arc advisor a handy tool however. Are you familiar with it?

I did not advise you to download anything, nor did I provide you with any download link.
I advised you to load the built-in Windows Update app and the click "View update history".

This is an example of what mine looks like that shows the previous mentioned updates for 2022-11(November 2022) and 2022-12(December 2022).

Yup. I'm pretty sure I got it.

Okay, so I dug a little deeper and although my first update was installed some time in 2010. It would seem that for the longest time I wasn't getting many updates after 2020. I'm not sure how old my installation has to be for this OS to qualify as a "new installation" but I'm guessing this old installation doesn't fit the bill. Anyway :::shrugs::: I'm happy with it. When it eventually starts to fall apart I'll just reinstall it. Probably time to make another drive image anyway. Thanks for the reminder

By pretending that I wanted to uninstall an update I found the updates for 2020. A whole mess of them covering all the months for the entire year of 2020. In fact there are too many to put into a single screen shot so I will spare the reader. Anyway, I thank you all for your concern. This old system runs great. I wish all my other Windows operating systems ran so trouble free. Here's a link to Bel Arc Advisor in case anyone is interested. It's free for private use and very handy. I wouldn't use a Windows operating system that's 34 months (February 2020 - December 2022) out of date.
But if you're content with using it, that's your choice.

Unless Microsoft is lying to me I have updates from 2010, all the way to and through 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. I don't have any PCs, to the best of my knowledge, that are that far behind on updates but now I'm beginning to wish that I did. I could see how long it would take for something bad to happen. I've heard of people completely shutting off updates and their PC working fine for them for decades without issue. You've given me an idea I'd like to try. Thank you

Why just ask for trouble?
In fact, even though I'm now running Win-11/Pro/64 here on my daily driver, I still have Win-7 Ultimate x86 running on a very old eMachine, that I just fire up once in a while, for the sheer heck of it. It runs just fine!

On every PC that I own (12) and with every version of Windows, that is installed, all Updates are shut OFF.
Over my 40+ years as a computer tech, I've run way too many service calls on PC's that were disabled by some crappy MS Update. So I'm just safe and not sorry, by remaining Update free.
I also refuse all vaccines, and I'm healthy as a race horse, even at 79 yrs old.

I wondered if you were one of those folks who just shuts off the updates @ EOL and I guessed correctly, it seems. I know of many who do this and report that their operating system runs better than ever. I also know that if virus and malware protection is a concern there are third party aps that will carry on with protection long after EOL.

And then there's good ole fashioned drive imaging. So if your "system restore" fails as it so often does (likely due to another update) you can always do your own refresh with a drive image. Personal files should be backed up on a regular basis anyway IMO. The thing about all these malicious exploits is that Microsoft doesn't really have any special inside knowledge that can say, trump Kaspersky or any other established data base that deals with such things. So these 'security updates' are dubious at best. A zero day exploit will have its way regardless, so yes: backup, backup, backup! Is best.

I really have to say that my Windows 7 has never run better. I'm sure there are aps and programs out there specifically designed to run on Win 10 or 11 that won't function on Windows 7. That's why I have multi-boot for when I want to use those. BUT with TPM2 I have to use a different device and this is really annoying at times. I suppose it could be worse. I'll just keep Win 11 on my laptop for the time being.

Funny what the Mage Meister said about vaccines. My eldest didn't have any from birth and he's strong as an ox. My youngest hasn't had a single vaccine in her life and she's just the same. My other three suffer from compromised immunity and they all had vaccines. hmmm :sarc: Really makes me wonder... HAPPY NEW YEAR!

well I'm keeping my brother's old Sony Vaio VPCEB (late 2010 model, 1st gen Intel core cpu is i3-380m) laptop at Win7 - never gonna upgrade it to Win10 (even when win7 goes completely eol in Jan 2023 for most editions).

though I did change the win7 edition from home premium to pro a few years ago

I loved my old Sony VAIO. It was a sad day when I finally put her to rest. Mind, I got that unit WAY back in the Windows "Mistake Edition" era. There really wasn't much in the way of hardware I could salvage from it in 2012. The days of IDE were done.
