hi everybody,

I've been reading all the way to page 12 but I haven't found anybody experiencing the same problem as me, and here I am... :)

you should be able to see my system specs, if it helps I can add that my hda has two partition (60Gb OS only + 190 for applications) and the same goes for my hdb (500Gb for games + 500Gb for anything else)

no software firewall, my anti virus is avast! free

all the latest drivers all installed, including nVidia 191.07 WHQL

and here is what I'm experiencing...

-Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising: I can connect to game servers, but it takes a long time to get the player list; once logged in, it looks like I'm stuck and I see my team mates sliding instead of walking (they told me they could see me moving and shooting). works perfectly in single player mode.

-Team fortress 2: I can connect to game servers and the ping shown is what it should be, but once I log into the game I'm able to see a bunch of frames every couple of minutes

-Urban Terror: the ping displayed near the game servers looks fine but once I'm in, I'm getting frequent connection error messages, sometimes the game server just kicks me out because of my high latency

-Combat arms: can't even log in, I just keep getting a connection error

-Aion: no problem at all, works perfectly and my ping is pretty good

-WoW: I've been playing using Win7 from June to mid September and I've never had a single connection problem

I've been monitoring my network performance while trying to play any of these games and everything besides the games seems to be working as it should (my ping on Ventrilo is constant at 64, normal browsing looks ok)

any help will be highly appreciated and whoever solves my problem will get a free slice of pizza! :D

Hello valfuindor, welcome to SF.
I have a few quick questions.
1.) did you do a clean install or an upgrade?
2.) I see you have all your games on a different drive from your OS, did you delete the game and reinstall it or just over write the folder when you reinstalled the game?
3.) Did you try to Defrag all Drives?
4.) What type of Router do you have? Does it have the latest firmware?
5.) What type of Network Card do you have? (I wish there was a spot in SysemSpecs for it)
6.) I have noticed some people are having issues with the 191 drivers have you tried to go back to the 189??

hi DarkXeno,

thanks for your reply

1. clean install
2. I've reinstalled all my games since last format. I've tried to run them in compatibility mode
3. done, using Defraggler
4. Netgear DG834Gv4, latest firmware and all the firewall rules properly created
5. Atheros, integrated into my motherboard. I wasn't able to check the exact model using the device manager, I guess I'd have to check using the BIOS. it wasn't specified on the user manual either
6. I think that at least two new driver version has come out since I've installed Win7 the first time (at the beginning of June, if I remind well)

I'm trying to figure out where exactly is the problem, since everything works fine using WinXP Pro. :sarc:

hhmm how about a test. Install the game to your windows drive and make sure the firewall on your pc is off and test. Also check to make sure your anitivirus software is not affecting things.

well I'll try installing a different anti virus...
anyway, also EVE online works perfectly.

I've been wondering what could be the difference between MMOs and FPS' connection...

The main difference is the way the server listens/sends data back to the clients.
MMOs are servers setup by the company that makes the game, so its a standard setup and port config.
FPS have dedicated server that can be setup by tons of different people and configured to talk/listen on different ports that are they are configured to. Hell with FPS you can rent a server from a company out there and they have it set to a different port due to them running 3/4 servers on one box.

well that would be weird, since among the people I play with that are running my same OS I'm the only one who is unable to play properly
we have different hardware specs ofc and different ISPs

Also the other items to look at are firewall, virus scanner, router, and any other services running in the back ground.

well, in the end it was all the router's fault :)
I've brought my PC to a friend's, tried with two of his routers and it worked, plugged mine with the same setting and the same issues showed up. It might be a bug with the latest version of DG834Gv4's firmware 5.01.14, also downgrading to .09 doesn't work. The weird thing is that using XP everything works with my router as well... I should investigate further on this matter.
anyway, solution: I've bought a Linksys WAG54G2 and everything works fine :D
