win7 on new HD and save data to 2nd HD?

hi all,

have a new HD on which I will install win7 home prem full version. The previous HD with vista and programs and data will become a 2nd HD on which I want to save data.
should I reformat that 2nd HD to clean it off or keep vista on it? Also how will I tell win7 to save data on the 2nd HD instead of the first HD? link to tutorials? search didnt find anything specific tho I might not have used the rights search terms.

From what I read I unplug the current HD, install new HD, boot to that n install win7.
the vista HD will show up as the 2nd HD...yes?

Yeah, I'd unplug the existing drive and then boot from the Win 7 install disc.

You tell Win 7 to save data on a particular drive by choosing that drive when you save a file.

Have you considered dividing your new disc into C for Win 7 and D for data, and then using the old drive as a backup disc for data?

Eventually, reformat the Vista disc, but you don't have to until you decide everything is cool with Windows 7.

Hello Msongs,

Do you want to be able to boot in Windows Vista while using Windows 7?

If you do not need anything from your old Vista installation, you can safely install your new HD, and start a clean install, and in the advanced disk options, remove the old vista partition, see this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

If you like to use some information from your Vista install, like bookmarks pictures and more, use Windows Easy Transfer, see this tutorial:

I strongly advise to do a clean install.
