Looking for email client w/calendar w/REMINDERS

I used Outlook 2000 on my last XP computer but Outlook 2000 does not work on Windows 7. While I've found a number of email clients that do the email job credibly, I can't find an email client program with a calendar that has reminders like Outlook. That is, I want something to pop up on my screen to remind me I have a dentist appointment in one hour, or I have to go someplace tomorrow, or I have a deadline coming up in three days.

I prefer something that resides locally on my machine. The calendar in Windows Live Mail is nice, but no reminder function. I think if I go online and register with Windows Live, they may have some sort of option where they send you an email reminding you of appointments, but that doesn't sound like the reminders function of Outlook. Besides, Microsoft knows enough about me already, I don't want them tracking my appointments.

Does anyone know of a resident email client with a calendar containing a reminder (alarm) function?

Thanks!

I personally do not know any free ones...

I know Office 2007 in Outlook as this function.. and Office 2003...Which are able to run under Windows 7..

You could just get Outlook and nothing else if you already a use a Office Program..(I just looked at the price it would be cheaper not to get the whole Office Suite...and just Outlook

Hope this Helps..and Happy Holidays..:)

If you're loathed to get a more recent version of MS Office then what about OpenOffice or StarOffice instead?

I use neither, so I don't know, but it would seem as they're directly competing with MS Office that they can hardly do that if they don't have an eMail client.

The OP can check the details, my suggestion was a 'heads up' for them :)

Hi ronald and welcome

I am like you afraid the only way to make the reminder work is a workaround and badly implemented. WLM will send an email but that doesnt do you much good if it is sent overnight for a 1pm appmnt.

sorry I cant help I would like it too

I also use Thunderbird with the lightning calendar. Took some time to get used to after leaving Outlook 2002, but now I have it working to my liking. I have the lightning calendar synchronized with google calendar, so anytime I make changes to the calendar, it updates on all my computers. The alarm system works the same as Outlook did.

I will not go back to Outlook. MS seems to try to keep forcing us to update office (I still use and like 2002), so they did not make Outlook backward compatible with Win 7.

Microsoft lay down set lifecycles for products. They're no longer obliged to support that software in their latest operating system - and nor, perhaps, could they, given that technology has moved on somewhat and they're no longer making any revenue on that version of Office products!

That's it in a nutshell!

I am considering buying Office 2007 Professional since the local community college has the academic version on sale for $99 (I'm a part-time staff member of the local school district.) However, all I really want out of it is Outlook since I've started using the open source "Open Office" for every6thing else (except email!) It's on sale until February, so I will give Lightning calendar a try and forgo Office if that works.

Thanks for all of the replies!

Use any edition of Microsoft works (I use version 7) it has a calandar and reminder setup. Over the last few years most computers came with a disc for Works.
