I'd suspect cards with an after-market heatsink would stay cooler than a standard reference design.

Unsigned drivers in 9.12 RC2 and D-Link issues

Thanks curtis

I also tried completely uninstalling CCC/drivers followed by Driver Wipe. Manually configured the drivers for 8.660.6 (funny, even after driver wipe I could still see the CCC 9.12 RC2 drivers, but I ignored those). My system was stable for a good 3 hours (the longest time yet).

After the crash, I did try to install the 9.12 RC2 drivers (8.671), but Win 7 x64 informs me the drivers are not signed! These are kernel mode drivers, so must be signed. Tried running Win 7 in Test mode (allowing unsigned drivers) but they still wouldn't load. Since then, I have rolled back to 8.660.6.

I have turned off Windows Aero theme, set the fan to 40% and seem to be having some level of stability with my business apps - running about 1 to 3 hours in between reboots.

You are also right about the D-Link cards. I have had major instability issues with them (both PCI and USB). D-Link don't seem to support x64 platforms very well. I finally ended up getting a router (D-Link DIR-300) and am using it as a bridge across my WLAN (courtesy of DD-WRT bios flash), sort of ironic I thought ;). This allows me to use the motherboard LAN ports and default drivers.

Set that fan higher and you may find perfect stability. Higher = better, of course. You can turn on Aero too. No need to disable with that card.

Hello all. So after many reinstallation of windows 7 and all the solutions I've read in the web I finally RMA my sapphire 5770, funny thing was when I was in the shop the problem is not showing up at first and finally the system locked up and we can see the artifacts. Im beginning to believe after all the problems people encountered with the 5770 that there is really a bad batch out there.

So far no crashes even using the ati 9.11 driver

I wasn't talking to you. If he's gaining stability at 40%.....do the math. It's probably rebooting on him because fan is only 40%.

Well, my card is idling at 38 degrees. Running desktop applications, it can get up to 50 degreees. Running NWN2 it gets up to 58 degrees. Funny thing is, I'm sure the crash is not heat related. It has crashed in the main menu for NWN2, about 5 minutes after the game starts. And other times, I have had NWN2 run for over 2 hours before it crashes. Other times, it has crashed on the desktop while moving a window.

I have installed MSI Afterburner to control the fan. At most, the fan has been running at 55% as the card never reached 60 degreees. Apparently, there is no difference in temperature if I set to 40% or 50% fan speed on the desktop, but the noise is annoying.

I ran Graphics Card Stress Test. The first time, it crashed after 30 seconds. After a reboot, it ran for half an hour without issue. It seems the more I stress the card, the longer it is running without a crash.

In any case, I have RMA'd for an exchange HD 5770. CCC 9.12 ('09.December) is due out, probably next week, so I will try a different card in the same rig, then I will try the new drivers. I will let you all know how I got on.

Gave up on ATI (Asus EAH5770)

Well, I'm afraid I decided to give up on ATI and my Asus EAH5770. After much patching, driver updating and testing, display continued to lock up with driver error recovery some times, mostly requiring a hard reset.

Asus agreed to RMA the card, but would not cross ship, so I would have been without a card for at least 2 weeks. I was also unwilling to wait and see if the next ATI driver would solve the problem.

The reseller I bought it from agreed to let me return it, and instead I ordered an EVGA GTX275. Although it's physically larger, it fits in my case without any trouble at all (Antec P193).

So far so good, no lock-ups... :D

That sucks man. I have done two RMAs with Asus and both times they cross shipped. You have to fill out some additional paperwork for an advance RMA though, including providing your credit information.

Not to be a d#ck or anything but...

If you had the money to get a GTX 275 in the first place, why go for a HD 5770?.

Most of the GTX 275s out there right now are going for HD 5850-money.

I have an HD 5850 and I don't have any particular problems with the Catalyst 9.11 driver set for Windows 7. I'm going to try the just released 9.12's later today, but I have to get a GOOD backup, first.

exactly what i thought:D a 260 is abit more compareable

my Powercolor 5770 is working great with windows 7 ultimate 64bit.
But like has been mentioned ,i too experienced quite alot of random reboots when i first got the card, but now its been running smoothly since i ccc 9.11.

I RMA'd a xfx 48701gb and decided to get a 5770 despite not been quite as powerful.
but it was a great decision because the 4870's are noisy as hell ,and i can now play gpu stressfull games with zero noise from my card and the games i play ,ive hardly noticed any change in performance compared to the 4870 ,

and of course other +'s like dx11
power consomption
etc.

The GTX 275 cost me $65 more than the EAH5770. At the outset, I really didn't want to spend more than $200 on a graphics card, which is what led me to the 5770. And I think it's an awesome value. Seemed to work great when it was working, and I really liked the mix of outputs. But I had problems with it under Win7 64bit - what can I say...

Anyway, I ended up with the 275 for a couple of reasons, obviously technical specs it gave me more than I needed, but also my reseller actually had it in stock. After spending over $2,200 building this machine, what's an extra $65?

I've had zero problems with it so far. I've read that it runs hot, and then the fan gets loud, but I'm not much of a gamer, so I may never notice. I'm more interested in video editing, and taking advantage of hardware acceleration for H.264. So far, I have not heard the fan at all...

I'm quite disappointed to hear that Asus does cross-ship. I actually called them to confirm, and they told me NO. Maybe their warranty support is different here in Canada? I definitely would have given this a try first had the been more helpful.
