Back Up Question

Hello,

Have a 1 TB external HD devoted for backups.

New PC, but did the first backup using the built in W7 backup program about a week ago.

Took a long time, but figured this was because it was the first backup.

My understand was that subsequent ones would just be for items that have changed, or are new.

But this second backup is taking every bit as long as the first.
Perhaps even longer.
Certainly doesn't appear to be doing any simple revisions to the first, main, one.

What am I missing, please, regarding how these backups work ?
Shouldn't new backups be fairly quick, at least compared to the first one done ?

Are there some settings or configurations that I haven't done ?

I have always experienced Windows backup to be painfully slow. Rest assured it won't be backing up the entire computer each time. It only backs up changed files. This is probably why it's so slow as it has to scan for file changes first.

Hi Bob,

I have found that subsequent backups take less time than the first. However, I have a 500gb hard drive and yours is twice that size. Then only you know, did you make a lot of changes since the prior backup? All of these factors may enter into the time needed to make a subsequent backup. I do, however, agree with the poster who has said that the back up does take a long time compared to some other backup programs.

Are you selecting the files you want backed up? You can do that.

Don't forget to save a backup image so reinstalls are never again necessary, just reimage the HD or a replacement.

How do I do this, please; the backup image ?
Is this something I have to tell it to do, in addition to the normal "do a backup" type of command ?

BTW: how do I select a particular file to backup, rather than gthe regular
backup where it does "most" everything, it seems ?

Not too great with this stuff; appreciate the help very much.

Imaging is a way to backup the entire W7 system (System and Data) ...
to a data file in your external ... See Here

But .. I use Acronis instead of Windows 7
