Help with deleting a partition

it says it can not repair!

All I want to do is to be able to access the hdd (I can plug it into my desk top pc sata) so that I can copy some of the files off it then I can do a clean win 7 install

Any ideas on how to access the drive because when I put it in my desk top pc it says it needs formatting before it can read it yet it shows up as disk D but will not let you access it.

Did you try running it again after it said that? You can do a repair install, which is just upgrading your present install. I'm not sure but I think windows old will still be available if thats where your important data is.

Yes I did try running it again but still no good, the repair install sound good I know there is still data on the drive because I just tried "get data back for ntfs" programe which is free to try and it is finding lots of files so the disc isn't blank.

Also when I put it in my desk top it want to check one of my hdds (the lap top disc) just before start up

If you would like specific advice on deleting these and recovering the space into Win7, please post back here a Screenshot of your full Disk Management map, using the Snipping tool in the Start Menu, attaching file using paper clip in reply box.

I am now in the deep sh.. I tried the free partition wiz it seemed to work ok it deleted the 2gb partition then I resized the other one by the 2gb.

However, the pc now won't boot is says there is no o/s !!!

This is why I asked for a Disk Mgmt screenshot so we could give you the exact steps to delete the recov partition and resize the Win7 partition into that space.

We do this all of the time here but it sometimes requires recovery afterward by booting into the WIn7 DVD repair console, clicking through to Recovery Tools and running Startup Repair 3 separate times to repair or rewrite the MBR to Win7.

We needed to first make sure Win7 is marked system active in the Disk Mgmt screenshot.

What's needed now is boot into PW bootable CD and copy down the exact info given on each partition. We are looking for which partitions are System and/or active.

If Win7 partition is not marked Active, rightclick in PW to Modify>Set Active.

If Win7 is marked System Active in Partition Wizard then Startup repair should restart the computer within 3 separate tries, however in some cases where no installation shows up in the Repair console, it is necessary to run bootrec and/or bootsect commands to jog the installer to show an installation to Startup Repair.

So if Startup Repair fails to restart it after three separate attempts, boot back into Repair console and open a Command Line to type exactly:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot

Now attempt restart, boot into Startup Repair and run at least 3 times. If fail, boot back into Repair Console, open another Command Line and type:

Bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force

Again, restart and if necessary boot into Startup Repair and run at least 3 times.

In every case I've helped with, Win7 has by now restarted.

I have now tried all this but the iso PW cd would not boot (i must be doing something wrong) so I put the laptop drive in my desktop and checked it says Active but it lists the file format as OTHER! anway I followed your instructions to the letter but still no boot.

I am now thinking of trying the "GetDataBack for NTFS" software its $80 but that is a small price to pay if it stops me having to tell my 17 year old daughter that dads f... up her lap top and lost ALL her files.

Been up most of the night so I am very tired now and feeling rather foolish having cocked it all up!

PW wouldn't BOOT or wouldn't LOAD ?

If it boots - when you get to the part asking about screen resolution - make sure your keyboard NUM LOCK is on. Then press 1, then press Enter.

1. If PW identifies the 7 partition as Active and ntfs - then all you need to do is run startup repair from the 7 dvd THREE TIMES.

2. If PW shows the file system as unknown, click Disk 1 at the top of the window to highlight it.

Click Partition Recovery in the left pane.

Do a Quick scan of the whole Disk.

If it offers to recover the partition as ntfs ( it probably will ) , select ALL the patitions you want to keep, click OK , Click Apply.

Then make sure the 7 partition is Active - if not, rt click it, Modify>Set as Active, click Apply.

Exit PW and run startup repair from the 7 dvd THREE TIMES.

3. If PW won't BOOT - there is another way - will post instructions if that is the case.

Thank you for all your attempts to help, its probably something I am not doing right but I could not resolve the problem by any of the methods offerd.

However I have now managed to recover the data my daughter needed by purchasing a copy of "Getdataback for NTFS" it cost me £50 ($80) but at least it got everything I needed off the drive.

I have now learnt not to mess around with things I am unsure of and its cost me a day of my life and £50 (could have been much worse)

Once again thank you guys for all your time effort and patience you have shown me.

So you hooked your laptop drive up to your desktop and used software to recover your data from the drive? Not a bad solution. Good job, for you did recover the important stuff. I use Windows Home Server for my backups. No matter what you use, back up your and your people's data. Saves as you now know time and money. He can get your computer restarted if you will only follow the steps given carefully.

Did you get PW to boot? If not, burn the bootable CD download ISO to CD at 4x with Verify on ImgBurn. View attachment 44167
