Hi, Welcome to SF,

You could try these step

1. Click Start then Computer.
On the Tools menu Then or Organize Folder Options.
On the View tab, click “Show hidden files and folders”.
Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
Click OK.
Right-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder, and then click Properties.
If the Read-only attibutes is checked, uncheck it and click, OK
Now try creating a restore point.

Warning: Remember to hide the hidden System Files when done.

2. This error might occurs because the recovery partition is enabled for File Backup or System Restore and is almost full. To work around this, do not select D:\ as a backup source. Also, go to System Protection in Control Panel and make sure that D:\ is not enabled for restore points.

3. Also try to reboot the Computer in Selective Startup with all the Protection Disabled

4. Type Services in Start Menu Search Box, hit Enter. Make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic. If the Status of System Restore Service is not Started, Start it. Also set it on Automatic if it is not. A reboot may be required. Reconfirm again, and now try

5. Reset the Repository.
Boot into Safe Mode without networking and open a command prompt as administrator.
Now Type net stop winmgmt and hit Enter. This will stop the Windows Management Instrumentation Service
Next go to C:\Windows\System32\wbem and rename the repository folder to repositoryold
Restart.
Now again open a command prompt as administrator, type net stop winmgmt and hit Enter.
Next Type winmgmt /resetRepository and hit Enter.
Restart. Now see if you can create a System Restore Point manually. Hope some of this helps.

Hope this helps
Captain

Thanks for all that - it all looks far too complex for my brain, I'm afraid

If you can make a system image and put it on a separte hard drive do it now.
When done turn off system restore
Turn off computer
Boot up
Turn on system restore

I have helped several people with system restore problems, turning on and off solved the problem for about half of them. Make the system image, first. You need a way to get back, if necessary and turning off system restore will cause you to lose your restore points.

If you do not know how to turn off system restore, go to help and support, by the start menu, and type in system restore.

I find that it is much easier to make an image of the system drive and keep it up to date rather than depend on system restore... if something does go wrong, it is a simple matter of restoring the image ...

System restore Error-0x80070005

Hs this been repoted to Microsoft? It can be a bug in the OS with large drives. MS should fix it and issue a Windows update.

system restore error 0x80070005 (SR can't access a file)

This is a security problem. I have been able to fix it by doing the following things:

1) Go to C:\System Volume Information, right click it then click Properties
2) In the General tab, clear the box Read Only in Attributes, then click Apply
3) Click the Security tab and click Continue
4) Create an Administrators group (if necessary) and give it Full control
5) Click OK to get out, then make a manual Restore Point (e.g. TestSR)
6) Test the new restore point to see if SR now works OK.

Hope this will fix the problem for you, as it did for me. Thanks.

I do not experience the problem any longer with my windows 8.1 pc. I think all the updates I have received and installed from Microsoft have cured the bug
