Win 7 Upgrade=EXTREMELY SLOW COMPUTER

I have read a lot of guides saying switch to high performance mode, but bear in mind this has an impact on your electric bill, and to those who laugh electricity now days is expensive enough to take notice in this sort of thing.

This is completely untrue. Nice fantasy though.

When Apple introduced Snow Leopard, many had upgrade issues.

Look on any Apple based forum and there are many issues.
Issues that, for the most part, can be overcome - same as with windows.

Calm down, take it step by step, do it right and in the end you will be rewarded.

My best advice, as long as you have a full copy of Win 7, is to wipe the drive using something like Darik's Boot and Nuke to really erase the drive. Windows does not do an adequate job of deleting the contents of old partitions. Then do a clean install.

Another tip, when you have real foul problems after an install or upgrade, always check the video drivers, they seem to really screw things up. Good advice above about getting drivers from the manufacturers of components, not microsoft.

agreed- its not the software that makes it complicated. its the hardware. as for battery life, i have never had the opportunity to run a laptop on batteries thank you. and see no need for them except to backup software. And as to what the one gentleman spoke about the dx engine, then obviously you do not know a lot about the dx system or the 780 chipset. The dx components will not update themselves if they are up to date. if you run the dx end user download, and it installs anything at all, then yours was out of date. period. thats the way the code for it is written. and for more information i suggest you do some homework on the amd website and find out more about the 780 chipset.
reading helps people learn how to do things right.

ANY APPLICATION THAT RUNS IN 3D WHETHER IT BE AUDIO OR VIDEO USES PIECES OF THE DX ENGINE. IF THATS NOT RIGHT, NOTHING ELSE WILL BE EITHER. HAVING THE LATEST UPGRADES WILL ENHANCE THIS OPERATION.

codify is correct speaking that the chipset does not require any of the dx software. however,
if you read any of the whitepapers on the amd site related to the this chipset it will say that applications running any form of 3d will. this includes the catalyst software that runs and controls the drivers. windows by itself does not provide full control over the chipset drivers. the catalyst software suite does. thats why it is a recommended download.

I come from a world where we need every ounce of performance we can get from a computer. I don't use or believe in green anything. sorry. our living and our families lives depend on all of our equipment running at maximum performance and being on call 24/7 whatever the computer may be and wherever in the united states it has to go. our company depends on it. when i have a unit that is running screens and video in a stadium with 50 to 100,000 people in them, there is no margin for mistakes freeze ups or any such nonsense. i have made my living doing this for almost 40 years. you can say what you want. yes in a perfect world, it would be easy to install and run. but every system builder has their way of doing things. sometimes you have to do a little homework when things just dont work the way you would like them to.

the gateway nv52 is an awesome little laptop for the price. maybe its possible you got a lemon. but im not seeing it. if you pop windows 7 in and expect perfection in 40 minutes its not going to happen. trust me it dont happen with a mac or apple either. sometimes you have to deal with the way a particular device is designed.

you can believe me, or take it up with gateway support. remember- everything written on a forum is OPINION. this is mine. but i want you to think about something. two computers built by my company will be a part of two major televised football games over the new years holiday. one of which is a nv 52 running windows 7 on a 7200rpm drive. it wont be running on batteries.

you can believe anything you want about what you read here but you have a good laptop and a good operating system. your obviously doing something wrong. and the first thing i would do is a full clean install. personally, i have never been able to match the performance in all the years ive been doing this, by doing a migration. it just dont work well. in a perfect world, yeah that would be nice. but this aint a perfect world or a wonderful life.

and to add to the post from rpmstl, the stock drive in that is a seagate. i would recommend going to the seagate website and tracking down seatools for dos, and burning it to a disc and using that before you install windows 7 . ESPECIALLY IF YOU DID A MIGRATION OR AN UPGRADE. the first thing to double check is make sure the drive is set for max native capacity, the next thing is to do a full erase. there is a lot of good software for cleaning and preparing disc drives, however we use the manufacturers software and get perfect results every time. there is a reason they provide that software, and after all, they built the drive, they should know.

Absolutely not true on this one point you make....though I admit there are some folks who can screw up the BRAINLESS upgrade install process when going from Vista to Win7.

I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit from Vista 64-bit without a single problem with the exception of an incompatible service that the laptop OEM placed on the machine when I bought it new. Once I was able to find and disable that the laptop has run like a dream.

And I'm rocking out a 7.4 on the performance index.

It is always interesting to here these so called expert opinions about in-pace upgrade. Of course you can screw it up like anything else, when you don't know what you are doing.

Well I got it to run a little faster as I go but my computer ONLY has 4GB of RAM so that may be it. I am still trying to disable hardware acceleration fully on my Gateway NV52 with the ATi Radeon card.

My computer also needs restarts as after it sits for a while it just slows and I can't even watch video on You Tube any more. Just Typical Windows B.S. over and over again. My 5 year old XP Unit is so much faster at this point I may just switch back.

Yo have to understand that I am an average user. Just average. I have a Windows 7 UPGRADE DISK, I cannot just install it dry, it won't let me. So if anyone wants to get me a new 7 disk then please do. I really don't know how to do a clean install or back up everything it's just too much for me THE AVERAGE USER WHO SAW COMMERCIAL THAT SAID HEY WINDOWS 7 ITS EASY JUST INSTALL IT!!!.

The DVD will scan the HD at bootup to see an existing OS and accept Upgrade Key.

They should change the commercial to say "Clean install it" since every in-place Upgrade has some level of corruption and yours appears severe.

I do understand: By now you could have been using a fast clean install for weeks.

Disk was free. I will try to reinstall it, wish me luck.

Thanks, just backing up everything now, I will do a custom install. I am trying to figure out how to drag office over but I can't yet. Share pod for music off my ipod so that's easy and the rest is docs and I will just download everything else.

Well this f'ing figures. Ok so I hit F2 to change the boot order in bios and saved it. It REFUSES TO LOAD THE DVD. Man I need some help because I have no idea what to do next. How do I boot from the DVD? I restarted the computer, pounded F2, changed the order off booting to CD/DVD 1st and well all I get is an error and then it just starts windows.

Run setup.exe from the DVD directly off your current installation and when it ask you what installation you want, pick Custom and select the main partition (C: ). It should move the old installation to "Windows.old" for later removal by you.

I don't know how to do this? I type in setup.exe and I get a million different things from C:./ I can't even get to the installation part. I am so lost right now.

When you boot up to Windows, you want to go to My Computer, and double click on the DVD drive that contains the Windows 7 DVD. If it does not autoplay it will open and there should be "setup.exe" right at the root of the DVD. Otherwise it will start the installation and walk you though. When giving a choice between "Upgrade" and "Custom" you are going to pick custom.

It will then come to a selection of hard drives (partitions) on where you want to install to. If there is only one, that is the one you pick.
