Have two PC, the Win 7 PC can see all drives on XP and modify all, the XP can see all drives , but the C: and M: drives say that I have not got permission to access them on the Win 7 PC. I have changed the permission to "full control" on the Win 7 drives and still no access. The other drives on the Win 7 PC I can see and modify etc.

what's the fix as I'm stumped !!!

So you cannot access c: of your Xp from w7? What have you set full control ? In the Security tab, do u have the account name that you are actually using, will full control there also?

AEM thanks

No, the other way round can't see C: on Win 7 from XP PC, but can see D: E: etc., but then not see M: drives on the Win 7 PC. The XP PC reports that I do not have access to these two drives, but access to others.

This might sound trivial, but have you checked that your c: have actually been shared out? If so, check the Share permission of C:, try and add actual user name and give it Full Control. Then try again.

Thanks

Just noticed that the C: & M: drive didn't have Everyone as a user. So added and granted permission to them and "Hey Presto" it now works.

Many Many thanks

Good to hear it's working.

If going thru Explorer is abit slow, you could also try the command line way.

eg, at command prompt, type \\ipaddresss\sharefoldername.

This is quicker. ;)

To me, doesn't matter if it lists under that location or not, if ping works, that's good enough for me to proceed with what i want to do.

Some times it will take a while to update the netbios information, but it should be pretty snappy.
Try this on the Win 7 machine
First make sure that netbios over tcp/ip is enabled in the properties of IPv4 for your network adapter.
Then in services.msc check and make sure that tcp/ip netbios helper services is started and running
Then from a command prompt type nbtstat -R
Then ping the xp machine by ip address
Then ping the xp machine by computername
Then type nbtstat -c and see if the correct name and ip association is in the Win 7 nebios cache table

Assuming the HP_Dell is the XP machine, is it showing up now in the network map?

No, not there, and can't seen XP PC no matter what I do, even through other programs.

Question

when I upgraded from XP to Win 7, I did notice in the adapters section of the Device Manager under the network area that there was a thing called Teredo tunnelling which is now missing. Can this be an issue as from what I have read this is used between IPV4 and IPV6?

No I don't believe that this would have any impact on the local area network. Are you sure you're not running any third party firewall and or third party anti virus / internet security suites on the XP machine that might be causing this, I know we've gone round and round on similar issues only to find out it was Norton's or McAfees or AVG. Just thought I would ask

OK have disabled ZoneAlarm Pro and AVG, now working,

Reinstalled ZoneAlarm (had all ports opened as per MS requirements for Win7), still working

Looking as if AVG is at issue. Is there anything in AVG that should be done ?

It would probably depend a lot on the version of AVG you have running. I know a lot of people have had some success by just uninstalling it, making sure that their network is running like they want and just reinstalling it. Don't know why exactly this seems to work but it has. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
Good Luck
