Right click on file in desktop-Explorer crashes!

As it says, if I open a folder and r/click any file (to send it to another disk), I get a message saying that Explorer has stopped working and then it is restarting. This happens every time I try this. It restarts OK every time but never tells me why it crashed.
When I go to do a System restore, it cannot complete the restore as it says a file cannot be accessed and that maybe an Anti-virus is running. I have disabled A/V and Firewall, both in Norton Internet Security which I only installed yesterday. All was working OK until later today, when I noticed that Windows 7 had installed 3 critical updates and I'm thinking that one or both are the cause?
These were KB973924 x 2 and KB972696.
Hope someone can help with this please!

First open command promt (Start>all programs>accesories>command promt or Windows key+R and tpe CMD and hit enter)

Download CC Cleaner and remove Norton
CCleaner - Download

If that doesnt work.then type sfc/ scannow
This will try to repair windows files,i.e explorer.

If that says it found no problems, try a repair install to re-install missing or corrupted files of windows, this wont effect your data.

"Download CC Cleaner and remove Norton"

Thanks for quick response.
I know Norton gets some bad reviews but the system was working earlier today (with Norton) which is why I suspect the critical updates, but I can't do the restore. I will try the sfc /scannow.
The window 7 is Home Premium (purchased).
Thanks.

Even though I am the administrator I cannot get cmd to work, it says I need to be an admin running a console session to use sfc /scannow so I'm stuck! I'm sure I have run sfc before now on this build of 7..

I tried a restore using the Repair disk and I was able to restore before the last 3 updates, and right click now works!

Belay that.

I just tried it again and Explorer crashed again. What is going on?

Sorry,i should have said.
Go to command promt via start menu>all programs>accessories>Command promt>Right click and Run as admin.(this is called elevated command promt)
Then run the sfc /scannow command line and see what it shows up,it should say it found a problem and fixed it,it found a problem and could not fix it or it found no problem.

If it did find a problem, then enter this into elevated CMD
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
Then upload the file placed on your desktop so we can have a look:)

Hi Bertie11, Welcome to SF,

It sound to might that the issue is going on with the Context Menu. You might wanna try ShellExView

The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers one-by-one and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

Hope this helps

The problem with that is that doing a right click to do an elevated comand prompt is that I can't, as Explorer crashes!
However, please see my response to Captain Jack.

Yes it helped, in that Shellex did find several non MS items that allowed me to right click once but then failed a second time. There were about 6 items that did this so, unless there was a combination of non MS items causing it I gave up on that. When I was able to do a r/c I then did an sfc /scannow and that came up clean.
I then removed Norton IS and the fault cleared, re-installed and the fault came back.
So. I went onto Norton Assistance and found a 6 month old link to these symptoms which were related to Avanquest Powerdesk 7, which I do use. The link advised me to download a fix, which still didn't cure the fault, so I have now removed Powerdesk and the fault has gone!
Which is good, but I really would like to keep Powerdesk! I'm trying out Norton IS as I've given up on Kaspersky IS, too obscure for me, I can't work out what it is saying!
Thanks to all for help

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Taking into account that I too am having an issue with Windows 7 upgrade, still unresolved, I have been following these threads with great interest and gleaning little bits and pieces of information. The input by posters is most enlightening and educational.

One apparently common event that seems to be coming to the forefront is that after a Windows 7 upgrade or installation, soon after, days or a couple of weeks, the lockups and freezes occur. That's what happened to me. And I read with interest your suspicion about a problem after one update. I harbored exactly the same suspicion.

As soon as I upgraded Windows 7 it had an issue with an interloper, uninvited software that installed a bandit tool bar. I think I cured that with Reg Cure. My computer operated a couple of weeks properly on Windows 7. Then one day Microsoft installed automatic updates and the next morning Windows tried to start but just sat there displaying "Windows is starting". I left it on for hours and it just wouldn't boot up all the way. Finally I got a diagnostic through the F keys that said "boot config corrupted" I'm getting recovery disks from the manufacturer.

I'll offer some more observations and opinions here:

* Two Windows 7 upgrade disks come in 32 bit and 64 bit.

* Old 32 bit software doesn't run well, or not at all, in 64 bit and vice verse.

* My older computer, the one that is giving me a problem, about 2 years old came with Vista 32 bit. It won't run 64 bit.

* I use Internet Explorer. I think it may have been version 7. There is now a FREE version 8 download.

* Trying to remedy the problem on a computer that was running OK on Vista, by trouble shooting hardware, may be a wild goose chase.

* As more information is gathered from posters I am concluding that:

1. The Windows 7 64 bit isn't getting along with 32 bit and older versions of web browsers and software. In fact it seems to have a true antagonism for competitive software !

2. Conversely some competitive software doesn't like Windows 7 very much and there is some conflict with some of it.

3. Some of the interlopers, malware, adware, data miners, worms, viruses, trojan horses may be causing some problems.

4. Microsoft's automatic updates are highly suspicious.

5. The problems may be multiple instead of singular.

6. The crashes, blue screens, lockups are, by a preponderance of evidence, emerging as software conflict problems and not hardware trouble in many if not most cases.

Addendum:

While I am NOT recommending Reg Cure, *( It has mixed reviews ) I will say that I ran scans on my problem computer, using what was installed, and they reported back only a handful of problem areas, about a dozen. After running Reg Cure it reported 186 problems that it fixed !!!!!!!! So I concluded that some so called remedial software doesn't cut the mustard. Buyer beware !

I have had this issue as well for quite a while and none of the solutions in this thread applied to me so I thought I'd post what I found from another source. the fix I found for my right clicking causing explorer.exe to crash was located here in a windows KB article:

FIX: The Explorer.exe process stops responding (hangs) when you use Windows Explorer that hosts a shell extension that was created by using MFC

the solution is to install an update to the Visual C redistributable package.

So far that has solved my issue.

Credits need to go to this thread where I found the link to the KB article:

Windows 7 - Right click causes explorer crash - fixed by Hotfix and regedit*|*MyTechSupport.ca

Hope this helps all who wander here looking for a solution.

Cheers
