Help setting up a new connection!

So i have telstra Bigpond as my internet provider, and using a net gear Wireless USB adapter to receive wirless singals.

How ever i did a Cleans install on a new partion on Windows 7, and yet i cant get my internet nor my adapter to work.

My adapter programs sorta installs on it, it does most of it until it comes up insert the USB adapter i click next and it close the install. There is a icon on the desktop u double click it and nothing happens!

If i could at least get that to work i could mayb get the internet to work

What kind of router are you using. Is the wireless signal on?

Are you using some other device to send a wireless signal?

Hi Mitch656, as i understand from your post, you might not have installed the driver for your adapter successfully. Can you go into Deive Manager and look at the device in question, and advise if there is a yellow exclamation mark against it. If it has then the first thing you need to do is complete the driver installation.

You mentioned the adapter program, is this off a CD or built into the adapter (installs as soon as you plug it in). Need you to provide more info on this.

Once you have the adapter up and running, we can look at your wireless network, and see how the adapter can detect and log onto it.

Maybe it will work if you turn off UAC. Which Netgear USB adaptor are you using and which wireless router?

Do you have a router?

If so, then go into Control Panel and uninstall Big Pond for now.

Go to Device Manager, click Network Adapter, find your Wireless Adapter, click on it, then Driver tab, then Update driver, then Browse, now browse to the old Windows 7 partition (D?) windows/system32/drivers and have it search that folder for your driver.

Once the driver is installed to the Network Adapter, right click network icon in system tray and Troubleshoot.

Go to Network & SHaring Center>Change Adapter Settings, rightclick wireless adapter and try to Connect, then Diagnose.

If no connection still, then put Big Pond CD in, right click on CD Drive, Open CD. Look for .exe file, rightclick choose Properties and on Compatibility tab set it to XP SP2 and Run As Admin., save and then click exe to see if it will install. If not try Vista mode.

Or call tech support to help you. They may have a file on their website for Windows 7.

Post a topic In Network forum here. Explain problem clearly.

So that means that Big Pond was not compatible with Windows 7 unless installed it in XP SP2 compatiblity mode. So it was yet another compatiblity issue, no surprize there.

I'm not familior with Big Pond but I tend to shy away from third party programs.

Bigpond was compatible with Vista, so i throught it would be in 7.

How ever i tryed setting up internet on Virtual PC with XP and Vista, and the same thing happen

I just found the drivers for net gear and then i was connected to the internet

Shy-ing away from third party sw is what i normally would do also. I always let windows decides first if it needs a third party sw, it will tell you if your device won't work it's built in utilities. I have only come across devices such as external USB modem (ie Huawei) that requires their own sw, any internal devices should be be detectable and usable with w7 builtin utils.

So you also needed to update your Netgear USB adaptor, no surpize there either which is why I asked about it in my first post. So many updates and compatiblity problems it's hard to keep up.

if i wanted to do it on a virtual Machine, how would i update it, its not connected to the internet the virtual Machine
