Win 8 and Win 7 SP1 Preparations. etc.

I would not say no to performance. It is a decent OS but by no means is it very performant. And its not like I have a slow machine either. Also I would like to see more performance in gaming. Aero despite pretty is still quite heavy.

How do you get that exactly? Vista > 7 was more then just performance changes. There we UI changes, new features, etc.

The UI and features in windows 7 are all layers over the vista kernel, but it's the same OS.. comparable to a kernel update in linux that happens every few weeks

I'd like to point out you just called it the same OS. Microsoft changed more then what is visually noticeable in the OS.

If you start from a blank page and write an all new kernel that puts hardware together in way nobody's seen before, you get a new OS, which everyone knows is not what happened. Basically the difference between vista and windows 7 is about the same as the difference between ubuntu 9.04 and ubuntu 9.10, maybe a little less. That's not saying I don't think windows 7 is a great product.. microsoft hit one out of the park with it so far as I'm concerned, but making some changes in graphical interface and features, & streamlining inefficiently written code doesn't make a new operating system.

I beg to differ, Microsoft did a lot more than streamline the code and add a few UI tweaks. They stripped down the kernel itself, taking away a great deal of superfluous junk (Google 'Minwin'). The use of DirectX 11 also greatly improved graphics performance with Seven. Granted, going from Vista to Seven isn't as dramatic a leap as XP to Vista, but it still warrants calling it a new OS, and not just a service pack.

Windows 8 is probably going to be more cloud-focused, sort of like Google's Chrome OS. One more reason to stick with Seven - I LIKE having all my information on my personal machine. :p

Hey, this is kinda out there - and maybe the wrong thread to ask this, but as JMH is talking abt the forums, what happened to the chromeosforums?

www.thechromeosforums.com

From what I was told by Shawn and John, it was removed due to lack of interest.

Just goes to show that Win7 was, in reality, Vista SP3 ;)

How do you get that exactly? Vista > 7 was more then just performance changes. There we UI changes, new features, etc.

And aren't those changes exactly what Vista users wanted in the next SP release?

Ergo, Win7 = Vista SP3

No, if it were Vista SP3, then it would be CALLED SP3, and it'd be free.

To everyone here who says Windows 7 is just Vista SP3...I would love to see the evidence that proves that. Where is the changelog between the versions that you guys are getting your info from? ...and if you say you have read a change log...you would be telling quite the fib

Calling it that is pure rubbish...Why don't we just call XP Windows Pretty 2000? Because it isn't and the same goes for 7

Oh, for Heaven's sake, all I'm saying is that Win 7 is what Vista should have evolved into.

As MattRainier says Microsoft should have released it as SP3 and given it to us free.

Apparantly (not definite) Microsoft is planning Windows 8 with nothing to base it on. Not just an update, a whole new OS, a bit like comparing Windows Explorer to Internet Explorer, both completely different, but has the same function: Browse through items. Therefore, I think that Windows 7 will be Windows Explorer, and Windows 8 will be Internet Explorer. Completely different (GUI, Ease of use) but has the same functions (To use the computer).

Just what I heard and now my point of view,

Dom

I'm just shocked that's all, I mean, when they were still making Vista it was like they were preparing a windows that would last forever but then they made 7 a couple of years later which was much better than the broken Vista AND was a great success as well. Why would they rush into a new windows right now while 7 is already kicking @$$ all over the world!!

Microsoft shouldn't be even worried about Chrome and Apple IMO...

Vista is comparable to Windows ME, As XP is comparable to Windows7

Asides from some roadmaps and Microsoft job listings unveiled by Stephen Chapman over at msftkitchen, nothing much is known about Windows 8 at this point in time. In our quest to see what’s going on over at Redmond, we got our hands on this list of builds from a very credible source within Microsoft (though it isn’t official, and it should be taken with a grain of salt):

Forget Windows 8, Windows 7 SP1 has not even been released yet...Microsoft needs to fix up all the little bugs and annoyances related to W7 RTM first before consumers start switching to Windows 7 and current W7 users start looking for info on Windows 8.

There are a few annoyances with Windows 7 I just can keep on the down-low. The biggest annoyances being Administrative Privileges for files and folders and NTUSER.DAT files showing up in My Folders (but this could be a PerfectDisk bug).

Peace :)

Seems to me that we have already seen a service pack build that was slicker and faster than the current build we're all using.

There were great all night leaked build frenzies occurring on this forum last Summer and I don't know whether it's just that I'm now taking W7 for granted but I'm sure some of those builds were better than the RTM.

I can't recall the numbers but I think build 7127 or 137 was very good and there was a leaked build from a Chinese site which had no installer but was part of the service pack series.
One of our esteemed members grafted on the front end of another build and it ran like an express train.

That would indicate that the service packs development coincided with the final touches being put on the RTM.

So I suppose MS could release an SP1 whenever they wish.:)

Windows 8 has been in planning since 7was in development...this is no shock as each company that produces products that improve on other products have future revisions in work with up coming revisions...

If they just started planning Win8 right now...that would be a true shock
