The color scheme has been changed... at random!?

I know there is another thread on the topic.

I fully understand that some software programs kick windows into the basic color scheme because of their limitations and inability to use the Aero interface. My problem is different, and I'm hoping there is some way to stop Windows from automatically changing my color scheme.

I have 2 video cards and 4 displays. I've got an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 to run my main displays and an NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT for my projector and peripheral display.

The problem is, while working in the main displays powered by the GTX 260, doing simple stuff like browsing the web or working in Office 2007, I'll randomly get a notice that Windows has noticed slow performance... then typically a few seconds later Windows will change my color scheme to basic.

So it seems Windows will change the color scheme for two reasons; 1) a program is trying to do something not supported by Aero, or 2) it notices there is a performance issue.

My question is this; is it possible to tell Windows to stop adjusting my color scheme due to performance issues?

I've done that already, setting it to custom. When Windows makes the change anyway, I notice that the box "Enable desktop composition" becomes unchecked. I can manually re-check it and things return to "normal", but Windows still seems to have control over that box regardless of the radio button being set to custom.

Ok, that may solve my problem, for which I am applicative. I will try it momentarily.

However I'm still curious if it is possible to wrest automatic control of my color scheme from the whim of Windows... and if so, how?
