What do you mean by going off every hour is the machine crashing/freezing or just shutting down?
And please fill in your system specs in user cp

.
As noted you will see much better performance with 2 gigs of ram. That would really be the first thing to do if you want it to go faster. Ram is cheap so do yourself a favor. It may solve the other issue as well.

Minimum requirements are notoriously too low and result in poor performance. That was true for Windows 95, XP, Vista and now 7. Why even mention it?

You sound like a prime candidate for ReadyBoost. Got a USB flash drive around? :geek:

Well now, that's not the case with my laptop.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate Edition on a mere 1 GB of RAM - and it's admirable, to say the least. I'm getting another gig to bump up my machines
specs, but Windows 7 on 1 GB is perfect in my case.

Option 1

If you got a USB pendrive/flashdrive you can use Readyboost

1.Insert your flash drive to your pc.
2.
Go to my computer.
2.Right-click your flash drive
3.Go to the Readyboost (tab)
4.Click the 3rd option shown.Move the arrow to the right and put it the maximum it would go.

Your flash drive memory would be very little. All the memory use up is to speed your computer.

Now for removing it do it the normal way you do it but we a pop up menu comes up click continue.

   Warning
this will take a lot of space on your flashdrive

To be fair I haven't tried Windows 7 with 1 gig. I have a laptop with 3 and maybe I will remove 2 and see what it's like. Vista was (and is) an absolute dog with 1 gig, but I've read that 7 does better. My question is why bother? Why use a computer with a ram bottleneck when a gig of ram can be had for less then the cost of many games? I know there are circumstances where the hardware can't be upgraded - there's nothing to be done about that - but when you have a choice it seems like bad economics to not upgrade. In my experience Windows is more stable as well when it doesn't have to rely heavily on the pagefile. :geek:

8.Now you will see all the boxes are unchecked.
9.Only click Use visual styles on windows and buttions
10.Then click Smooth edged of screen fonts.
11.Go to the advanced (tab)
12.At the bottom click change.
13.Click your hard drive
14.Click Custom Size
15.Put anything you want(don't use too much)(eg.for Inital size I put 10000)MAx.10000)
16.Click set and restart your pc.

sounds like you have something else going on if the computer is shutting down this would not be caused by lack of ram.

I have ran 7 on 768 megs in a laptop with a single core 1.6 Ghz CPU and it wasn't to bad

Speed Up

the best way to quickly speed things up is by disabling unneeded programs and services that load with windows followed by turning off extra eye candy

the real problem is that as you know your system shouldn't be running windows 7, i'd wager with only 512 ram most if not all of your components are below the recommended minimum. also consider the stuff removed from the orginal ISO, your computer simply isn't going to run stably for long periods of time. now you could potentially make it better, try installing a low resource alternative shell like emerge desktop, turning off any and all features you don't need will also help and i suppose ready boost will too but remember it's not a replacement for ram, what it does is moves the cache that would normally be on your hard disk to the faster flash based memory. also contrary to what you may hear elsewhere it can only use up to 4gb per flash drive, this is actually i limitation of both the 32 and 64 bit versions that many people do not realize and i believe windows will actually report back that it does use more on larger drives but that is false.

Tested HP 510 laptop with 512mb: can run Win7 for light websurfing, Works, 1-2 gadgets, but no AV - even one as lean as Avast. Can not multi-task more than 1-2 tasks at a time.

Even this much performance requires turning off most visual effects & indexing.
