Local shops are useless - overpriced and antiquated stocks. Online is where you'll find them:

eg:

Intel Socket 1366 : PC Case Gear, Delivering quality computer parts Australia wide

Intel Socket 1366

(I swore I'd never use them again - but they had what I needed and apparently the new staff are great - they better be ;) :o )

Orpheous - I bought it from scorptec (down south), chose the parts myself and got them to build it. When it arrived I was getting BSoD right after installing windows 7. Tried to resolve it myself with the help of some folks on here :) but I couldn't fix the issue so I sent it back and asked them to take a look. I received an email from them today saying they have shipped it back with an invoice for $0. I assume that the problem was with the new hardware and they have repaired it free of charge. I'll get it back next week. If I have any problems, I'll let you know since you're local and all ;)

Smarteyeball :p

$0 does sound like faulty h/ware. Good luck with the replacement :)

Thanks smarteyeball - looking forward to my windows 7 machine so I can retire this one. Thinking of putting 7 on my notebook but not sure it's beefy enough to handle it. I'll look into it soon. Considering it is only used to play movies through our TV at the moment, there's probably not much point but I do use it when I go away for uni res school so it might be nice having 7 across all my systems.

New staff at PCCG? Does James still own it??

Sally, the Handbrake, has dealt with them from the days, when his mum was helping.
Never had any real issues. Have heard they were starting to get a bit lacks, or something.
Added my 2 bob's worth in a thread on Whirlpool, suggesting to get back to how he was years ago.

We haven't bought too many mobo's, ram, cpu's local for ages. Lots of better deals to be had online. Just buy HDD's, PSU's etc, local.

Today, i went PC parts shopping, looking for everything, this part of the world is far behind AUS US and UK as far as PC technology is concerned, i can't seem to locate myself a DDR3 Mobo nor a pair of DDR3 RAM sticks to go with it..or a Nvidia GTX 295, or a Core i7.

Visiting the capital Manilla soon, so lets hope they have there.

Seems to be a trend, as far as I've noticed. At least here in Europe. Even in the bigger cities you sometimes have problems to find hardware and components on store selves. And if you find a component store, it is quite often a smaller, one room "me and my mate" shop with an organized chaos. (Nothing against it, I gladly support small private enterprises.)

The downtown big markets concentrate on whole systems. If you need components other than GPU and sound cards which they always keep in stock, you really have to keep looking.

The whole component market seems to be moved to Internet and to those small shops I mentioned above. Here in Leipzig I know two small shops where I normally always find the component I'm looking. This city is not so big, about half a million inhabitants, still big enough that you could expect to find about everything you need, but if you don't know about these small shops it can be really hard to find. Backorder, yes. Store self, no.

Nina,

I've got Windows 7 pro running on an Acer AspireOne netbook (1GB ram version), and it runs just fine :), at least as fast as the original XP but seems faster because of the improvements in design of win7 over XP :)

Last Monday we sorted out my new bedroom furniture for £304 including delivery (not actually ordered yet). It consists of:

3+2 chess of drawers.
1 wardrobe
1 bedside cabinet, which I will use as a small cupboard.

Today I tried to get to Hastings College by train, but because of the snow they were all delayed or cancelled. So interview will be rescheduled by the Jobcentre to a different date.

Kari;

My observation here in North America is the same as yours. It is probably the same everywhere.

One thing to consider, the advantage Internet businesses have over a local store, is that when a small local store puts an item in stock they have paid for the item. The longer it stays on the shelf the less it is worth. For example, a box of 100 500 GB harddrives may cost $69.00USD each today, but next month you and I will be able to order one online for $59.00USD shipping paid because 750 GB harddrives are now available. How can a retail store earn a profit selling a harddrive they paid $69 for for $59? Who is going to be willing to pay $69 plus 20% markup for something they can order online for $59? It is just not good business to stock something you can't sell for a profit. IMHO, the computer market is just crazy.

The only advantage the local store has is if you have to have it right now and cost is less important. And the "value" of local support and the exchange of deffective parts without a shipping company in between?

Hope this point of view helps explain some of the cause of the "overpriced and antiquated stocks" of local retail business? Kari, I wish more people shared your view: "I gladly support small private enterprises."

Cheers!
Robert

Well most of the morning was taken up by looking after my grandson while his Mum took his baby brother for his first injections, should have had them last week but the surgery canceled because of the weather.

She was glad to have them done though as this first lot contain the whooping cough one and her next door neighbours have had whooping cough.

The rest of the day taken up trying to catch up with washing, cooking and the computer, it's now time to shut down for the night so that was a quick day.
