Guys I would really appreciate any help you can offer me.

My user account is an admin, but I was told Win 7 (Pro x64) has a disabled admin account as well. I enabled this account and even when logged in as that, I am getting errors that have to do with access levels.

"The installer does not have the privileges for [folder location]" I know Computers very well, but I admit I know next to nothing about permissions. I did add my user account to the ADMINISTRATORS group, but this has done nothing for me.

When I check the SECURITY on the folder in question, it says the ADMINISTRATORS group only has SPECIAL rights. I don't know what that means, but if you guys could help me, it would really save me a lot of frustration.

Thanks for the welcome.

In this case (and as what was with most cases when I researched this on Google), it happens when you are installing/uninstalling/repairing programs. In this case, I was installing the 64-bit version of ESET Smart Security 4, and it was installing into C:\Program Files\ESET.

My machine was custom created from a 3rd party. It is installed as a clean OEM copy. This particular PC has never had any other OS on it. I've had it since 11/25/2009, and the problem has only recently started.

How recently did the problem arise? Would a system restore help?

You may also try taking ownership of the folder.

By what I've seen, solution-wise, taking ownership sounds like it would fix the problem (I have not performed that action yet)

I come from a strong background in Windows XP Pro, and when you are a system administrator of the local PC, there is almost nothing you can't do (especially things as simple as installing software) Though I like Windows 7's features and usability boosts, their permission's management seems a lot more intricate and difficult.

My user account is a member of the ADMINISTRATORS GROUP. You'd think giving that group FULL CONTROL on that folder would be enough.... but the permissions are seemingly greyed out where I can't change them, just seem them; and the ADMINISTRATORS group has "SPECIAL" permissions (I have no idea what that means).

Anytime you install repair or rmove an app a special group called trusted insstallers own it. You either have to take ownership or add yourself to the trusted installers group.

I DID see a Trusted Installers group, but I had never seen this group before, so I left it alone. If you can help me take ownership or become a part of that group so that I can install/uninstall programs in my computer, that sounds like it would be a solution.

of course its pretty easy. You might want to install the take ownership on your context menu for future needs. instructions on it (and it is very easy) here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html?ltr=T

I installed and tried this, and it looked like a command prompt window came up and left, however, how do I know if this worked? Should I see my user account on the security tab of the object I attempted to take ownership of? Because if that's the case, my user account is not there.

Can you skip it, or did it stop there?

You may want to disable ESET for this action.

Can you skip it, or did it stop there?

You may want to disable ESET for this action.

You get the option to CONTINUE/CANCEL, and I continued. It came up with that error for just about every single file under the ESET folder location.

ESET is not installed at the moment. I am attempting to reinstall it.

I cannot delete the ESET folder. Even after taking permissions I still do not have rights to. So I tried to reinstalled the software into C:\Program Files\ESET SS

I get the error:
THE INSTALLER HAS INSUFFICIENT PRIVILEGES TO MODIFY THIS FILE:
C:\PROGRAMDATA\ESET\ESET SMART SECURITY\EHTTPSVR.XML

Do I need to take ownership of C:\ProgramData and all subfolders now?
