Windows 7 32/64 bit and oem question

If you are unable to run Recovery or use Recov disks you make to install 64 bit, then make sure your computer is 64 bit capable.

You can unlock all versions in your Ultimate 64 bit installer by extracting files, deleting ei.cfg is Sources folder, then recompiling into ISO using Vlite to burn to DVD.

You'll then boot the DVD to do a Custom clean install using Drive Tools to format before install. Be sure to select your correct version; wait until after install to insert key on license sticker at Computer>Properties.

To make sure you have a path back if you encounter any difficulties, save a Win7 Backup Image now externally which can be used to reimage the HD from booted Win7 DVD in 15 minutes.

The primary question is if the machine can run 64 bit, since Win7 EULA states clearly you can use either 64 or 32 bit with each license and nothing the manufacturer says can override that.

yes im sure my laptop is 64bit capable, but my real initial question was if i could use one of the windows ultimate untouched dvd's with my key that is located under my laptop (which is i guess an OEM key which might cause a problem), since i dont have the samsung recovery discs with windows 7 on them. Im doing backups but i think they wont help that much either since theyll be all 32 bit versions.

Btw thanks for all your quick answers :)

Not if your license is for Home Premium - the key on sticker won't activate Ultimate.

That's why I showed you how to unlock all versions in your Ultimate installer: so you can clean reinstall your licensed version which will activate with the key on the COA.

As with Vista, the same installer will work for OEM or retail as long is it is correct version.

yes im creating a full backup right now, its taking its time though, 12GB of data on 3 DVD's

ill let you know what happens next =)

cheers and thanks a lot:D

You asked if you could use your 64 bit Ultimate installer and it would activate using the key on the license sticker for your machine, right?

What I am trying to say is you will need to install 64 bit Home Premium as Ultimate will not activate with a Home Premium key.

This requires unlocking all versions in the 64 bit install DVD as given above.

We do not talk about illegal downloads.

ok, but i think the ultimate disc will have all the options there listed already (at least saw on screenshots, i guess someone did that unlocking for me) but are you sure that my oem key will work on any dvd that has home premium, or just some specific OEM dvd provided by the manufacturer, thats what im wondering.
I dont really care if i loose my data since the laptop is quite new.

oh and @theog, im not talking about illegall downloads, i just want to use my purchased key on the 64 bit version. If i wanted to install a cracked version of it i would have just downloaded it straight away, but i dont want to.

Theog, I must be really naive here because I didn't see anything referring to an illegal download.

He says he has an installer which means he could qualify under the EULA to reinstall 64 bit to activate with his Home Premium license if he can unlock all versions in that installer.

The only wording I don't recognize in his description of his Ultimate installer is "untouched." Is this some kind of giveaway that he is talking about a torrent? Just asking.

It would be idiotic to install any kind of unstable cracked version when you own a Win7 license for that machine.

well theres lots of "preactivated" downloads around, but i dont trust those and by untouched i mean the clean DVD that is sold by microsoft, not edited by anyone (those can be downloaded when purchased from micrsoft , but theres other places to download those and use your own purchased key with them)

Are you sure my licence will work on one of those discs tho, thats what im really wondering about, or does it have to be a disc offered by the manufacturer.

thanks.

The Retail and OEM installer in Win7 are the same.

If you have any problem activating after installing 64 bit Home Premium over the internet or if elevated to robocall, then speak with a MS agent and tell them you reinstalled 64 bit to use all of your RAM. This is why they allow either 32 or 64 bit with each Win7 license.

The only difference in the manufacturer's Recovey Disks nowadays is they have all of the bloatware whereas the clean-copy installer doesn't.

cool, cus as far as i remember on windows XP it was different, the OEM and regular XP versions.
And true, i dont want all that software junk installed either on my pc.

Cheers and thank all for your quick help. I may stick around more here, this place is quite nice. :)

It is a LAPTOP. Some of that "software junk" will include the power-saving features, function key drivers, etc, etc. Best check for exactly which junk software you have installed now and whether it is available as a download for re-install if needed.

I am a PC technician and my advice is , Don`t change anything on your laptop! You will gain nothing! And are you prepared to download every driver you need and any software you have installed now ? Not to mention if you have a warranty it will be voided. :)

I managed to install windows home premium with my OEM key that i got, and it wasnt like you said, i could just use the retail dvd to do so, i had to recompile it after changing the .cfg file where i had to change the 'channel' from retail to OEM for the key to work. As for my drivers and software, i had them all backed up with the backup app and reinstalled everything neccesary to operate (and no i didnt install everything it had, i dont want every software that there was, lots of trial apps, cyberlink? or an antivirus that i dont want, i installed those on my own). After the installation the activation worked like a charm :)
and @ Zomby88, why would it void my warranty when i didnt touch any of the hardware or didnt remove the recovery part of the hdd, i just reformatted the partitioned parts. :S

well i finally got it the way i wanted it to be at least.

Good for you, Zhuki. Nice work.

A true tech enthusiast differs from the average user in their eagerness to shed bloatware, clean install the OS they own on the machine they own to configure it the way they want.

The only question I have is the extra step you said you needed besides deleting ei.cfg to unlock all versions in the installer:
i had to change the 'channel' from retail to OEM for the key to work.
I've never heard of this except in XP and wonder if I am misreading what you are saying. There is no extra step to use the Win7 retail installer to install OEM as they are the same installer, as has been the case since XP.
