Yes, they are for when nothing else works, but if you don't have the majority of your data files on the C drive, you can reinstall windows without much data lose. I also have an external backup in case my hard drive dies or a virus I can't remove causes havoc to more than just windows. This is a way to 1). Keep your files a little safer. 2). Be much less of a burden if you need to re-install windows as you won't have to copy all that stuff back to your harddrive. The way you've done it works and if you don't want to bother, that's fine.
