how to zip file with winrar

I am trying to zip a file with winrar and can't figure it out. with my windows xp I go in and hold my shift key down to select all the parts of the file and right click and add to archive and it zips for me...this windows 7 is confusing....tyvm

Winrar doesnt "zip" files it "rars" them Winrar should be in your context menu. If you right click there should be items like on mine. See pic.

I don't have the winrar showing when I right click and thats what I mean't by saying zip...lol

I don't quite get whether you need to add the items to you context menu or actually zip files with WinRAR, but here are instructions for both:

If you need to add the items to you context menu:
a) Open WinRAR... for example, pressing Windows key, typing WinRAR and then clicking on the program icon.
b) Go Options->Settings->Intergration.
c) Tick "Integrate WinRAR into shell" and "Icons in context menus"
d) Click "Context menu items..." to pick what do you want to have integrated.

If you need to default WinRAR into zipping the items instead of raring the files, go to "Compression" menu in the "Settings" (as I showed above) and click "Create default" and make the relevant changes.

hi Lila if you follow higgins advice and make sure you have a tick mark in the context menu icons there should not be any reason for it not to work

Do you have winrar downloaded & installed properly on win7 ?

I have done what higgins has said, well actually didn't have to cause it was already setup that way and its still not working

winrar works for me when I do a download and I extract the files with no problem so not sure why it won't give me the options as in the screen shot that zigzag has

Quick start: archiving files in Explorer or Desktop
If you did not disable the "Integrate WinRAR into shell" option when installing WinRAR, it is possible to archive files directly in a Windows shell. Select the files you are going to compress, in Explorer or Desktop, press the right mouse button on the selected files and choose "Add to archive…". Enter the destination archive name in the dialog box which appears or accept the default name. You may also select the format of the new archive (RAR or ZIP), compression level, volume size and other archiving parameters. This dialog is described in detail in the Archive name and parameters dialog topic. Click on the OK button when done. An archive will be created in the same folder as the selected files.
You may also select the "Add to <archive name> archive" command to add to the proposed archive without additional requests. In this case compression settings selected in the default compression profile will be used.
Note that if the option "Cascaded context menus" in Integration settings dialog is switched on, you need to open "WinRAR" submenu to access to described above commands. Otherwise they are resided in the top level menu.
Another method is to drag file icons to an existing archive icon and drop them. Files will be added to this archive.

hi lila , inthe settings/intergration window untick and retick all the checkmarks you have then see if windows brings up an information window asking permission for the changes

did what you said and no box popped up asking for permission for changing settings...grrrrrrrrrr this is so frustrating...ty

right that shows a problem with the install , if you still have your disc or original install files , uninstall your current setup and reinstall under vista compatability mode right click on setup .exe file>properties>compat>run as vista>tick run as admin>apply>ok and exit then right click on setup file again and run as admin hope that helps
