What don't you like about Windows 7?

You could also try Gimp. Its not as fat as photoshop and its free! It also uses layers. Did I mention it was free?

It sounds good, but what is the cost of it? :D

Libraries are extremely useful in a network sharing situation. Have some music stored locally and on the network? Add both locations to the 'music' library and then point your player at that library. No need to mess around with adding network folders in the player itself.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly! Without the Libraries feature, it would be nearly impossible for me to manage close on 364,657 Pictures, Music, Video and Documents that are spread across 9 hard disks spanning just over 2TB. With Libraries, I have one Picture "folder". One "Music" folder. One "Programming" or "Downloads" folder.

+1

I thought I'm the only one who likes libraries

Not at all. I have 3 computers in my household running Windows 7 and Libraries has been a godsend for sharing files via Homegroup. Much more organized than having a bunch of "shared folders".

Yeah.. Libraries are a very useful feature if you are like me and you have a million files of various kinds scattered all over.. If could just get my company to install it on our work laptops, I would be set.. Just play with them a bit. Sort them by type, and you can in one quick step, see every word file regardless of which folder it is subbed in inside your my docs folder. It is the concept of virtual folders, long over due. In any case, if one does not like them, they are very easy to remove.. I think this is more like a knee jerk reaction to the just the idea of something new.. In these peoples defense though, it does feel like Microsoft likes to herd us all in whatever direction they think we should go, adding new and better while at the same time removing old and familiar, not the best way of doing things.. Some cows will be less happy with the new scenery than others, some will paw the ground and snort... In the end, we all wind up in the stable, one way or another..

Hah - great if I could!

This is an inbuilt Microsoft Software/driver problem in WIN 7 & VISTA - & how long has Vista been out! Some say AGP-PCI system driver causes it.

You can't even install Win 7 if you have 3gb ram on a Socket A PC > it just crashes with all sorts of different fault codes till you reduce to 2gb!!

3gb on the same Socket A computers works 100% perfect with WinXP - go figure!

The thing with libraries is that once you create that link in the library, it is part of the library. So instead of setting up an application to look in multiple folders (say a music or photo program) you can just say 'look at pictures'. It will recognise pictures as one folder, and be able to access them instantly.

I think the one hurdle that makes people not like Libraries, is that they are still stuck in the old "My Documents" metaphor, and do not realize that a single "Documents" library can include multiple locations.

I've grown so accustomed to utilizing Libraries combined with the Search features (first introduced in Vista), that the old Disk/Folder paradigm feels old and antiquated now...
I have 6 drives, and I just divide my stuff between them. I have foobar2000 monitor 2 drives totaling 1.5GB, rather than adding them to a library first. I have another drive for DVDs and I keep my general files and programming on a partition of my OS drive. I use 2 more drives for backing up my music and other important things. I have no need for libraries because I already have my computer organized fine using the folder structure, I just go Computer->Whatever drive I want->Subfolders.

The only place Windows Explorer has completely failed me has been in music folders where you need to view and arrange them by different criteria. Luckily foobar2000 exists and does the job perfectly, a lot better than Windows ever will I'm sure. I can mass write custom tags and sort my files based on any patterns and criteria I wish. I don't open my music directories any more in explorer, I can do absolutely everything from foobar and it's not a bloated app... what a glorious concept!

I like a few things about Windows 7, but I not where they add useless features. I don't like how they put libraries first everywhere, for me the Desktop should come first as that's the area where I'm actively working with temporary files and such. Libraries just seems to be a feature for lazy or stupid people who cannot figure out how to arrange their files in a tree, so they have a second tree to link branches of the first one!

Personally, I think more folks will be/are happy with libraries than are not.. In my case, I have too many of certain kinds of files for them all to fit on one disk, and I constantly get more, so sometimes things pile up. Having libraries, may very well be enabling me to be lazy, but it also provides a nice way to handle incoming data when one is crunched for time. Store stuff here till a window opens when I can organize, but see everything all at once in library, and search instantly. As was mentioned, they are very easy to delete and disable... If you don't like them, don't use them.. I too wish Windows was more customize-able, with legacy features available for those who wish to use them. But it adds to the over-all bloat of the OS, both for install, and for disk space required. One of these days, I know we will see a mainstream OS for the avg user, that lets you install/enable only the features you want, and leave out what you do not want. Everything is still there, and the power is truly in the hands of the end user to customize his or her individual workstation..

If we want to start making a true effort at saving our planet, yes. Yet until that day, we're stuck at being forced to let valuable storage space go to utter waste on our solid state drives due to several hundreds of things which are inside Windows even though we won't ever use them and we can't usually get rid of them much easily, either.

My only problem with windows 7, is that all the folders in "libraries" are not in alphabetical order. When I click sort, it takes all the files out of their folders and dumps them in one folder in alphabetical order, this sucks. Any one else getting that? or is there a simple solution I have missed?

I never noticed that. How weird.
If you right click on the folder and select 'group by' > 'name' it will arrange into alphabetical order in groups of A-H, I-P and Q-Z. That is the best I could find. I am assuming you want to just have a list of everything sorted into alphabetical order, without grouping folders separately?

To undo the grouping, just select 'group by' > 'none'.

Dependencies aren't such a huge problem to me because I have enough spare time and experience to eventually grow a fair bit of immunity towards them, for example by researching the impact of all sorts of futuristic trickery.

Yeah? I have yet to see a single "average" user that knows enough about Windows to know which feature are important and which are not. Chances are, if an "average" user gets to choose which features to install and which to leave out, you'll end up with yet more arguments about how Windows doesn't do enough or doesn't support some features, simply because the "average" user chose not to install them, and does not know how to put them back later.

Windows live is a virus. This is my conclusion.

So many times I have had issues with windows live installations and uninstallations and after many hours I finally would just format or forget about it.

I really wish microsoft would allow you to download the stand alone packages instead of that crapshoot of a downloader... why do so many software packages want you to use these stupid downloaders is beyond me... If I want to install live messenger I should be able to just download and only install it and nothing else... but nooooo...

:(

Hmm well I installed messenger and live mail all by itself, no problems.

I can't remember the exact process, been several months now but you can select individual packages to install, unless they recently completely changed it.
