As a general rule, makers of fake antivirus software copy legitimate security solutions in order to give their own programs a feeling of authenticity. It’s a common occurrence for rogue antivirus programs to sport a look and feel similar to those of a genuine one, and especially to feature similar labels. Case in point: Security Essentials 2010, a fake antivirus program that attempts to pass itself for Microsoft Security Essentials. In the screenshot at the top of this article, users can see what Security Essentials 2010 looks like in order to know what to stay away from.

It has nothing to do with being on a Windows related forum and researching about AV products. They are clueless and that's what gives IT support people jobs (thankfully) and AV companies revenue.

It's the same as vehicles. I won't be scared to admit that I am clueless about an engine and that is why auto repair shop employees have jobs.

Sure, but clueless just seemed harsh to me. Most people could give a crap about security software. They just want their computer to work, so when they see something, they don't know how to react to it, thus the issues with rogue AV's currently.

You said it. Many people use their PC like an appliance. They know how to push 3 buttons, and that's it. They are easy pray.

They think they are virus free and are also in a very controlled and restricted OS so they think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Even doctors, that can perform intricate surgical procedures to save a child's life, are completely clueless when it comes to a computer.

You have said it 3 times already. I keep trying to tell you how it is directed. I could think of 100 words that are harsh when it comes to the average Joe user.
