I hate that it develops all the usualy, old XP flaws: getting slower and less stable over time, shutdowns that take forever, explorer going busylooping and hanging, ...

Why was I so easily impressed initially and stupidly believe, that Win 7 would be better than XP?
I should have listened to Apple's ads...

Hm, thanks! You finally made it perfectly clear to me: If I want a fast computer I have to do the following: freshly install the computer, then shut it down and stow it away at a safe, cool place. Once a month take it out, switch it on and delight myself over how fast it boots! Then immediately shut it down again and stow it away till next month, etc. With that treatment it will remain fast and uncluttered over years! You actually might be right: probably that's exactly what this OS is made for!

Well you sort of have it right.

WHat you do is install the apps you want and need to use. But don;t install 8 different video players and 6 bittorrent clients and 4 browsers and on and on, especially this early in the game when most of them are not even really tested on 7.

I have about 30 apps installed including some big hitters and my boot up and down is lightning fast. I trim my startup apps and in ONE case I had a sound driver that hung the shutdown because it was not a vetted 7 driver and I found the cure on the net and fixed it.

So yes my one real speed issue I caused by installing an old driver in Windows 7 because they didn't have a 7 driver at the time. But I took personal responsibility for it, fixed it and didn't complain that Windows 7 was junk because it hung on shutdown for a long time...

My main moan is the way that Desktop folders and Windows Explorer are visually linked.

I want my Desktop Folders not to have the left hand pane but I want Windows Explorer to have it - just like XP was.

I don't see the point of having a Desktop Games folder for example with a directory tree but if I turn it off then Explorer loses it as well :(

Who thinks up these bizarre changes?

I Did ;) - I'm a PC and win7 was my idea :p

But seriously, the reason for a lot of rationalization in the operation of win7 was, I believe, due to the perceived bloat problem with Vista and to an extent with XP - in order to give you this option would take additional code and space for storing your choices, the same applies to manual ordering of folder items. The individual cost of these options may not be great but given that no two users will want the exact same thing - developers have to make a judgment call as to what changes will give the best saving and inconvenience the fewest users, it's a compromise. I can feel for the user who's personal way of working has been compromised, but I can understand the wider benefits, that the rationalization brings

Who thinks up these bizarre changes?

What is so bizarre about that? Sounds like the logical thing to do.
Why not use the Game Explorer instead? (Will automatically download icons and info)

Explore the features: Games Explorer

I was only using games as an example, I have a multitude of desktop folders with all my various applications readily to hand. I just don't want or need a directory tree in these folders.
As the following post hints, we are not all alike in what we see as beneficial.

I hate that it develops all the usualy, old XP flaws: getting slower and less stable over time, shutdowns that take forever, explorer going busylooping and hanging, ...

These things happen because of the applications you install. YOU are the cause.

Yes and no.

Obviously as you install applications that should run at startup, yes. If they integrate with the Explorer yes.

However, I work for a company, LANDesk, that has lots of applications that should start at "Startup" and we have taken many measures to make this not slow down startup as much (accept AV, we have to have that start ASAP).

Microsoft doesn't appear to do threading. If there are five applications to start, we should have an option to make them less priorty than the boot/login screen, because really, even though they start, the Login shouldn't be that much slower.

In Explorer.exe too. I have an issue that occurs whether or not any applications are installed or not. The main GUI in Explorer.exe still shuts down for weird reasons that are insignificant to what you are actually trying to do. For example, I have a huge problem with Explorer after waking up from hibernation that I have discussed indepth on my blog (I would link to it but I got in trouble for linking to my blog but just google for these words: Windows 7 New Folder Hang). I don't care what is happening in the background, if Microsoft spawned a new thread to do it and the gui continued on, this would not be a problem.

I don't care how well Windows 7 runs alone (with out apps) because nobody buys Windows 7 to run it only. We buy to run our apps. So the only thing that matters is how well it runs with our apps installed.

Installing applications does not have to cause slowness. There are many solutions to slowness caused by installed applications that Microsoft has failed to implement.

So Yes, it may be the apps fault. But Microsoft knows this and still failed to make significant changes to Explorer.exe and most of the rest of their OS to handle the problem that is "supposedly" caused by Apps.

Unfortunately, a lot of times that you run into that situation with explorer, it is because it (and all other copies and potentially all other programs on the machine) are in fact fighting for limited use hardware resources. The MAIN culprit is ususally the hard drive. But also networking. If a single app of any kind causes a block on the hard drive, every single other app in the machine will block behind it. You can only read one thing at a time off the drive and if it's spun down or gone off line, or struggling with a bad sector, well...

And explorer IS multi threaded you can see for yourself in the task manager. But you can't just spawn a new thread to do something when that somthing almost /always/ requires reading from the HD which has already been blocked by something else.

I'm not saying that there couldn't be improvements, I've complained about a couple of explorer issues myself with buggy codecs. But a lot of times the issues are in fact related to the hardware tying the hands of the software in some pretty severe and sometimes cryptic ways.

If somehow software could be freed from hardware, man... heheh It's a software engineers dream!

I beg to differ. Just search this forum or Google "Disable Auto Arrange" Tell all those people it doesnt need to be fixed. I think whoever came up with the idea to Force Auto Arrange on us is broken :D

Broken refers to something that doesn't work. Auto arrange is working as designed.

If a large number of users want to turn it off and cant, It's broken. Reducing bloat by getting rid of options/menus that were there already? Perhaps focus less on the graphics and more on the functionality. There are some teriffic improvements in Win 7, but the frustration factor from missing options/Menus/etc.. needs to be addressed.
:) I'm a PC, but they didn't ask me. (Ignored?) :)
