Windows 7 with Radeon HD 5770

Solved

I had solved the VERTICAL LINES issue by lowering the memory frequency. I'm at 800 now and my computer is perfectly stable for two days now in any game. The GPU is at default speed of 850 Mhz. I'll go up with the memories until I'll find the max stable clock.

I had use ati systray tool for the downclocking. So it seems it's a hardware issue, I'm doing a few more tests in the coming days to be sure and change the card after.

I have the gigabyte's hd 5770 with the original cooling part.

After a few more tests to vertical lines on HD 5770

Oki, I just set the clocks back to default 850/1200 and the video card works flawlessly. But keep in mind that I set the clocks to their default speed with ati systray tool and because of that the clock want come down in idle, it will always stay at that clock speed.

So the problem arise because the card is always changing the clocks down, I played in windowed mode and I had GPU-Z on front seeing how the freq is going to 600 to 157 and back to 850 during game play for the GPU. So when the speed stays constant the card just works. It's a bios issue with the card. I will test it more to be sure that's the issue.

HD 5770 vertical lines issue solve

I'm sure now why we get those lines. There is a bios issue.
When the clocks are going up and down so is the voltage: 850/1200 - 157/1200 - 600/1200; 1.125V - 0.925V.

So when we get spikes in frequencies meaning the gpu will clock up from idle to 850/1200 (paying games, watching movies, even in desktop moving windows) so will the voltage but that is on paper. The card has trouble to clock the voltage fast enough with the frequencies.

In ATI Systray Tool there is a tab with two choices for voltages: 1.125 and 0.925 - when I selected 0.925 with 850/1200 I instantly got the vertical lines (blue this time). When I have 1.125 and 850/1200 the card is behaving flawlessly because these settings are constant, the card when idling will stay at this speeds.

So if you want to be power efficient just create a profile with 150/300 Mhz and 0.925V and that's it. You will have manually chose another profile with 850/1200 when you play games.

There are many new bioses for HD 5770 on www,techpowerup.com :

There are 3 for my gigabyte HD 5770 But I haven't tried non of them yet.
Cheers.

It seems that either ATI are totally incompetent at making drivers or this is a pretty serious hardware problem. I to am suffering from this problem i have tried all the drivers i can find including the 10.3 betas and nothing works many others are suffering from this as well.

I was having a problem with "Display drivers stopped responding and has recovered". Then my computer would lock up. I would have to reboot into safe mode and uninstall the drivers. I was in the process of RMA my card. When I stumbled a pond this post it helped me fixed my problem. After testing the profile it worked. So I flashed my bios with these settings. No more have I gotten the error. Its been 3 days now.

Bashup posted:
I got a fix for this from a friend of mine who is better at pooters n googling than me.
It would seem the idle speeds of my HD5750 and my mates hd5900whatever are a bit low for win7.
Here's what I he and I did and I'm told others have had success with this on other ATI cards.
Using Catalyst Control Center I made a new profile and saved it as whatever.
CCCManager.gif

Then found it in user>appdata>local>ATI>ACE>Profiles, opened it with notepad and
changed two lines which set the minimum idle speed from 157/300MHz to 250/500MHz. (plus the two extra zeros you see in the pic ie 25000 & 50000)
ProfPad.gif

Restart/activate the new profile and jobsagoodun.
I was told to start off with 450/900MHz and gradually reduce it until I found the lowest stable idle speeds.
I'm happy with 250/500 and I havent had a TDR, BSOD or any problems since. woohoo!

How do you mean you flashed the bios with these settings? Do you mean you flashed a new bios for the gpu?

I've had no issues to speak of with the 5770 either. And I'm seriously hoping it stays that way. The card performs great im my new build.

kitkatsavvy,

I don't have that problem although similar. My mouse freezes, it does not get larger, and the whole system freezes. The main screen shrinks slightly too. I have to pull the power wait about a minute and reboot. Its totaly random, happens after seconds or hours....

I have now sent the Asus 5770 for rma.

I bought a cheap £30 5450 and it is silent and can't see any difference in performance, although I do not play games. It is just for True hd audio and hd video. £100 cheaper!!
But guess what! The pc still froze....
It might not be the graphic card.
So far I have :
Checked and swaped ram and ran mem test.
Done a clean install of windows 7x64
I have RMA'd the psu,motherboard,graphic card.
Checked for over heating
Flashed bios.

Its crazy...The only thing it can be is the cpu or driver related, I have all the latest drivers. The cpu was fine before I upgraded my motherboard.
Could the hot fix solve this??Can anyone help??Could the asus AI auto settings in bios be the problem?I have tried different voltages but it still freezes! So I have it all on default.

well guys, i installed the 9.12 driver with the hotfix, and i am having no problems at all! i am suspecting that it is the new drivers that are fault.. so uninstall your current driver, then download the catalyst 9.12 hotfix (comes with the old driver). i hope nothing goes wrong, and amd is still replying to my problem.

HD5770 crash fixed

Well, after a lot of crashing and reading forums I eventually found a fix that brought my daily crashes down to around 1 per month... I increased the PCI latency to 128 (twice what it had been, effectively allowing the device twice the time for its instructions) It doesn't appear to have caused any other problems and my system ran great for quite a while....just the occasional crash (approx 1 per month). I have now installed the cat 10.3 which is now available and hope that this is the end to the HD5770 problems.

HD 5770 Display Driver Crash Solution/Fix

So I registered here just to post the solution to this issue. It was pissing me off and im sure the rest of you too. The problem comes from the gpu clock and memory clock being to low to push the accelerated 2d UI.

So here is how I fixed it, I found this info with my google-fu :p

Code:
Here is the workaround:

Open CCC and switch to ATI Overdrive
Unlock and enable Overdrive
Go to Options/Profiles/Profile Manager and create a new profile called, let's say, STABLE.
Save the new profile. But DO NOT ACTIVATE the profile.
Now go to C:\Users\{YourUserName}\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles folder ( I assume C: is your system drive )
Note: You should have " show hidden files " turned on to see the folder.
Open the .xml file named STABLE with notepad.
Change the values of the idle Core clock and Memory clock speeds below

Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0"
Property name="Want_0" value="40000" note: previous value should be "15700"

Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0"
Property name="Want_0" value="90000" note: previous value should be "30000"
Save the file and close it.
Go back to CCC and activate the profile. This will make the card idle at 400 MHz core clock and 900 MHz memory clock.

I found that the gpu core will run the UI stable at 226MHz tho if 400 MHz is too high for you. Prior to doing this I had the display driver crashing every 20 minutes or so.
Enjoy and Good luck.

JaS
