Hmmm, perhaps, but what I was saying is the update is gone period, I never installed it and it was in my hidden update area but as of yesterday it no longer shows up anywhere, currently available or hidden updates.

You can check your Scheduled Tasks to see it it is installed. Also, it it is installed you will have Windows Activation Technologies Service in your services set to Manual. You will have C:\Windows\system32\Wat\WatAdminSvc.exe on your hard drive.

I think what you did the screen shot of is Task Scheduler Local. If it is there you will find it in Task Scheduler Local>Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>Windows>Windows Activation Technologies.

Sure and its there I did install it on my VMware virtual machine copy of win7 and it shows in all the right places in there... though I had to go to the site and get it as it never came thru windows update...so I have to guess it was withdrawn from the win update

Could it be that MS has a few people smart enough to realize that this "update" would alienate a lot of their customers? If not, they should have. Despite the fact that there are some of this forum's oligarchy that seems to think that this is a good idea, I sometimes think that these members are those with a vested interest in MS, or in software development in general, rather than a typical private user.

I stated in another thread that I think MS released it as an optional update to test consumer reaction to it. I also believe it will part of SP1 and we will not have a choice. I am not particularly fond of programs phoning phoning home and I have no ties to MS - stock or otherwise; but I did install WAT to experiment with it. I really resented the WGA in XP phoning home every time I booted. I blocked it through my firewall. Doing so apparently caused no problems.

I just took a quick look at the firewall rules in XP MCE that I just installed, and I didn't find anything that looked like WGA in the firewall rules. How would it be identified?

I was using ZoneAlarm at the time with XP. ZA would ask me every time a new program or service tried to access the internet. I do not remember the actual name of of the WGA service. ZA gave me the options to (1) allow the program in this instance (2) always allow (3) block the program in this instance or (4) always block. With WGA, I general choose to block it in that instance so that ZA would ask me every time WGA tried to phone home.

The built in firewalls of XP, Vista, and Seven do not make it easy to block outgoing programs/services. With Seven, I am using Comodo and it asked me before I let WAT phone home. This is why I use a third party firewall instead of the built in firewall. Since I am behind a router's hardware firewall, I am not concerned about incoming.

I use Outpost Security Suite, which I'm sure has the ability to block it, except that I turned on training mode, which creates rules automatically to make it somewhat easier. I could still alter the rules, if I knew which one to alter? It seems odd that I have used a variety of firewalls with XP, and none of them ever said anything about WGA. I guess that it must be somewhat disguised.
