Is there a way to put the "old" Wordpad on Windows7? I hate that ribbon thing and would really rather use a program with a normal menu.

Try to replace the wordpad.exe which is in "%ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe" with the Vista model. In Vista you find it in the same place. But save the Win7 model somewhere, just in case it does not work.

PS: I just played with it. Unfortunately the Trusted Installer is in the way. Here is how you can get control of the file: (source: Microsoft forum - lost the link)

1. At an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
takeown /f Path_And_File_Name
For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER to grant administrators full access to the file:
icacls Path_And_File_Name /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
For example, type icacls E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll /grant administrators:F.
3. Type the following command to replace the file with a known good copy of the file:
Copy Path_And_File_Name_Of_Source_File Path_And_File_Name_Of_Destination
For example, type copy E:\temp\jscript.dll E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.

However, be careful with this method. This is no childs play.

Thanks for the reply. I tried using Take Ownership shell extension. I renamed the original with a _SAVE suffix, and copied the Vista 32 bit one in. But when I double clicked I got "cannot create new document" or some similar error.

I ended up just getting a freebie .rtf editor. The WordPad in Vista64 is less than 1 MB. The one in Windows7 32 bit is 4 MB. Seems kind of strange. Unless the freebie starts acting up, it looks like my problem is solved though.

Thanks for the report. Apparently the .exe cannot operate in an alien environment. Maybe one has to copy the en_US folder too. But since your problem seems to be solved, we'll stop experimenting (although I like that).

Did you know that you can select to minimize the ribbon, and it disappears?

Then what? Does it give the standard menu? I didn't see such a setting. Maybe you can tell me how to get it?
