Google Chrome and Windows 7 x64

When you first install Google Chrome in Windows 7 x64, it doesn't work. It installs. It runs. But it doesn't actually display anything. I've found several fixes for the problem, but they're not complete. They only work if you launch Chrome from its icon.

The fix for launching Chrome from its icon:
  1. Right click the icon and select Properties
  2. Select the Shortcut tab
  3. Add a space and --in-process-plugins to the Target field, after …\chrome.exe"
  4. Click OK

It's a pretty simple fix, but it works; however, it does have one disadvantage. If Chrome is not already open, opening a link from another program (if Chrome is your default web browser) or from Open With doesn't work. It's not a big deal, but after a few times, it can get on your nerves.

To completely resolve the problem requires a few changes to the registry. Essentially, we're applying the same fix to four locations in the registry with one minor change. The registry commands to launch Chrome contain additional arguments.

Each key needs to be changed from looking like
…\chrome.exe" -- "%1"
to
…\chrome.exe"--in-process-plugins -- "%1"

The registry keys to change:
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\chrome.exe\shell\open\command
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ChromeHTML\shell\open\command
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\chrome.exe\shell\open\command
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ChromeHTML\shell\open\command

Same here, in some cases it works, but the browser often crashes when browsing some ajax websites. I guess, we'll have to wait until Google releases a compatible version for Windows 7. It's a little strange that all other browsers seem to work fine with W7, but Google Chrome.

Google Chrome HTML Icons

Hi, folks,

I just installed Windows 7 x64 Home Premium and have the latest Dev build of Google Chrome installed. It works fine except for one Windows issue that I wondering if any Chrome users have encountered: any HTML file shows up not as the Chrome logo but as a blank file icon. Granted, clicking on an HTML file: example.html will launch Google Chrome and I can view the document, but the icon won't change.

Here's what I've tried to alleviate the problem:

1. Deleted IconCache.db (several times)
2. Restarted the PC numerous times
3. Ensured that the Default Programs in Control Panel points to Chrome. (Even in Default Programs the .htm and .html files are blank icons there too.)
4. Changed screen resolution to 125% and then restarted. No luck.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

What version are you running exactly? The chrome logo thing was a symptom of version 3 series and Ive not seen it since.

New update: I had to edit a webpage and used FileZilla 3.3.2 and the icon next to .html files was the correct Chrome icon and not a blank document icon. Not sure if this additional information helps or hurts. Cheers.

I've found absolutely nothing official on Google Chrome for Windows 7 64bit users, or Java 64bit. I searched and searched and found nothing but "in the works" "unofficial" releases that have reportedly done more harm than good for 64bit users =\. Can someone please post a link to Chrome 64bit and Java 64bit? Many thanks.

For 64-bit Java go to the following link, and select Windows x64 under platform.

For 64-bit Chrome, Google currently has no plans for a Windows/OS X 64-bit Chrome Browser. Apparently the V8 Engine is hard to get working in 64-bit (something like that) besides, theres no Flash for 64-bit Windows yet so its rather pointless unless your one of the 3% of Internet users that do not use Flash.

^Thanks for the link. However, BIG CATCH i suppose, will i NEED a x64 browser to utilize Java x64? Also i already have Java in 32bit format, should i uninstall the one i already have first before installing the x64 build of Java?

32-bit/64-bit Java can be installed side-by-side with no problems. Only 64-bit browsers will utilize the 64-bit Java though.

^ Since there is no official x64bit browser then there really is no point in me getting x64bit Java then. Man I hope that 64bit becomes the norm soon.
