Can someone explain how temps work for a gpu?

My graphics card hits 70C ever time I play any game, and it's a 5770 which are supposed to be the cooler cards. Don't freak till it hits 90C.

As for artifacting, well that occurs from overclocking. If you bought a factory overclocked card, return it as defective, if you bought a stock card, you may be able to return it as defective, and if you're OCing yourself, then reduce your OC.
Nah its a normal 4850 sapphire. Clocked to 650 default. GTA4 just gives artifacts sometimes. Dunno why.

Gah, I need to relax.

Tried it, still happened randomly on medium. I get 30+ fps maxed so, I'll stick with it.

Now if only I could disable VPU recovery. Its part of w7, and i got no idea how to kill it off.
It seems to be handled by TDR, so I reset its timer for checks. That should solve shit.

60 is normal idle range for this card as the fan is run at a fairly low idle speed int he first place

No it isn't.
VPU Recovery=/=TDR.

VPU recovery is handled by the ATI driver while TDR is handled by both Windows and Driver.
disabling TDR's is not the solution. Solving the TDR is.

Check the specifications of your system memory for starters and manually set its timings and voltage as required.

TDR's can occur due to issues in network, audio or sata drivers, as well as DPC latency.

Not on windows 7. Google it. Its handled by TDR. I been looking this stuff up for a few days now.

Thats because VPU was an XP feature of the Catalyst drivers.

Nvidia had an early implementation as well which never really took off but handled a few driver recoveries.

Information for disabling can be found at

Wow! 70C? I have never seen mine go above 59C benching or gaming. Current custom clocks: gpu clock 905MHz and mem clock 1365MHz

Airflow counts after all.

I'm not unused to 85c temps when the gpu is maxed out... but thats not something that can be guaged on an ati gpu as they haven't developed an interface like nvidia's nvapi :\

I had a small 80mm fan from an old pc I had but it wasnt helping much. My room is just sweltering right now. I kick the fan up to 70% while gaming for the summer. I have read a few places VPU can cause more crash than it cures, and people with my problem turned off CCC and it went away. I am assuming CCC and windows TDR work together. But if it is TDR, I have reset its timer from 2 seconds to 8 seconds, to give it a chance. If it is that, this will fix it. Its just when I leave the RPG on all night selling stuff, because people from all over the world play, sometimes it will grey screen with the lines. its either heat or VPU type crash. I have narrowed down its not the card. I don't think its heat either. Ran furmark, satbility test. After it got to 60cm it held its temp between 60 - 63. It clocked a nice nice amount of FPS also. Its not the card, must be driver related, or long period heat related, but the game only makes it get to 45c tops in most cases. Its just, weird.

NVAPI is an interface that allows applications to access hardware information such as currently used gpu and memory, among other things.

if your fps gets to slow you can actually rely o nthe gpu usage to find where the drops are coming from.

though most often they are caused by a the overuse of shadows.

Yea I know. Thats why it doesnt bother me, but still, It just didnt make sense, because the cpu cooled from 46c turning off after medium load, to 32c ._.

If it cools down fast, it has a great cooling system. You should be happy with your temps. Mine Idles at high 30s and low 40s. With MW2 and WoW @ maximum settings and 1920x1080 , see:

No no, the load on the gpu was so heavy the power consumption killed a 550w psu. Could have been a shit psu also, but its still a lot.
