Default File Type Associations - Restore

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations

   Information
The downloads below will allow you to restore the Windows 7 default registry entries and program associations of the selected file extension type.
   Note
This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

Since there are so many default file extension types in Windows 7, it may take a bit to have a complete list of them below. If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)
   Warning

Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.

If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg for the file extension below while logged into their administrator account.

These default file extensions should only be used in Windows 7.

:note: For Windows 10, please see here - Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Customization Tutorials

Here's How:
1. Click on a listed file extension below the blue NOTE box that you would like to restore the default associations of. This will be for the downloadable .reg file for the listed file extension.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file, and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.
   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.
NOTE: If you are logged in a standard user account, then you will get a Cannot import type error. Just click on OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default association of the file extension though.

5. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .zip or .reg files on the desktop if you like.

6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.

Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:
   Note
To download all available file extension fixes below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

Hey Brink,

I don't know if you remember but I had that problem with my downloads having the extension changed from .BAT to .DOWNLOAD.

I was wondering if there might be an addition to this list of .BAT files?

I have eliminated Anti-Virus as the cause, and I am pretty sure I eliminated my browser.....which is Chrome.

I tested by shutting down AV and downloading the files. Still being re-named
I uninstalled Chrome, all settings and re-installed. The only thing I did was save my bookmarks.

I am still having the problem of renamed files. They respond to me renaming them .BAT, but I would prefer to restore association.

Is there a way to restore ALL associations at once? I am getting lost in so many tutorials.

Thanks Brink, I appreciate all your help.
:devil:D93

**EDIT**
Just went back into the list and found bat option . I don't know if I missed it before, or if you added it but either way thank you, and I am going to see if this will get rid of this trivial, but annoying problem.

Hello Jay,

Unfortunately this is not a bad association problem that is renaming the .bat file extension to .download. My guess is that may be some sort of security setting in Chrome that is the cause. As a test, try downloading the .bat file using Internet Explorer or Firefox to see if it renamed using them.

I think my Windows 7 (32bit) registry is screwed. Your .msi reg fixed my .msi problem. I still have issues with .msp It is not recognized and has no file association by Windows 7.

Can you post a reg fix for .msp?

Thanks a million!

Yes, checked IE. It works fine with IE. But not Chrome.

Just a weird bug I think because I have completely removed then re-installed Chrome and the problem still persists. It's just some bug I guess.

The files work fine if I just rename them and .BAT is the only extension I have come across that does this so far.

Weird.

Thanks though

That's what I kinda thought and I have been told, but other potentially hazardous files like .exe I have no problem downloading with Chrome. Curious to what I could do to remedy it, or even where to start looking.

Any ideas?

Winrar Problem

Hi Shawn,

I have a question regarding WinRar ..

If you associate .rar with WinRar's program will I then be able to select a couple of .rar files .... right click on them and see the EXTRACT feature.

As you probably know some .rar files are joined meaning they need to be opened together (I think).

I've tried selecting WinRar from the programs file but for some reason Windows 7 won't acknowledge it to EXTRACT with.

Even when I've tried to use WinZip to Extract the files if I select more than 1 .rar file, I lose the ability to EXTRACT, I can OPEN but not EXTRACT multiple files.

If I use Open With ..
WinRar is there, but only can be used on ONE file (not two)

This is so perplexing and the .otf fix you created for me straightened my opening of those files right out so I was just wondering if your magic could straighten out my WinRar problem.

Thanks so much for any help or information you might have on this.

 Jenn

Hello Jenn,

WinRAR should have set RAR files to be opened by it by default during it's installation. In WinRAR, click on Options, Settings, Integration tab, and make sure RAR is checked. Click on OK. When I select more than on RAR file to open with WinRAR, it opens them in separate WinRAR windows.

Hi Shawn,

I checked my settings and everything is the same as your screenshot, except I don't see the 7-Zip in mine. (Screenshot Attached)

Also, everytime WinRar opens I have to use the UAC giving it permission to open the file.

I've got a question and you might know the answer.

Some programs I install will have a tiny Microsoft emblem embedded in the right hand corner of the installed programs shortcut ... then other programs I install will not have it. (Screenshot Attached)

Is there any reason for this??? Because WinRar is one of the installed programs showing the Microsoft emblem on the shortcut. I would REALLY LOVE to KNOW why that happens.

Thank you for trying to help me but obviously this was not the answer for me.

Jenn

Jenn,

You might see if uninstalling and reinstalling WinRAR may allow it to open those type of files by default afterwards.

The shield icon you see is the UAC overlay icon. It indicates that you will get a UAC prompt that you must then allow permission before that shortcut or program will be allowed to run or open.

Hi Shawn,

Thank YOU so very much for that information on the embedded Microsoft emblem, that was driving me nuts.

You know what is weird, in prowling around because I was thinking like you to uninstall and then try again ... for some reason WinRar is not showing up in the Installed Programs but it is there under C:\Programs .. HOW WEIRD. In all my years on the computer I've never seen that but this Windows 7 is a totally new animal for me.

Now my problem is, how to uninstall a program that Windows is not pulling into programs that I CAN uninstall.

Ohhh me, more headaches.

I guess I'll have to find an uninstall program other than windows to see if it can find it and will pick it up.

Again, Thank YOU so much.

Jenn
