Windows 7 with Radeon HD 5770

i just checked and my MSI R5770 HAWK runs Aero with GPU @ 157 and memory @ 300. Cat 10.3. no problems whatsoever.

Wish that was the case for most of us. The method posted above gets my XFX HD 5770 working with no problems whatsoever. For what ever reason there are those of us that need to bump the gpu up a bit to stablize things.

weird

btw i assembled another computer from my old parts and geforce 6200 driver (from ms update) sometimes crashes and recovers while playing video. that's the first time i experienced such a thing under Aero.

This has helped solve my problems with the "display driver stopped working and has recovered" notice, where sometimes my mouse would freeze, then the system would freeze if it did not recover.

So far so good; am giving it a week to make sure.

Thanks, JaSOSx86.

+Thinking of changing the case, the cable management is stupid, one side panel will not close.

+I'm also new to making comps (new hobby).
I'm having trouble with my Asus Radeon HD 5770 card, too, which is why I joined up here.

For some reason, after I installed it my keyboard and mouse will stop working whenever the computer has to think too hard. If I move my mouse around too quickly, if I have a few tabs loading in Firefox, or just whenever.

Also, it's begun to show some performance issues when I play Prototype. Yesterday, after I installed the card, Prototype ran like butter with beautiful sparkling graphics, but the keyboard and mouse would just stop working. Today when I was playing, the keyboard and mouse didn't lock up nearly as often, but the video was choppy and kept slowing down.

Do you guys think it's a driver issue, or did I just get a bad card?

The keyboard and mouse are wireless. I know that most gamers prefer a wired desktop, but the wireless setup I have has never given me any problems in games before.

At the moment I've pulled the card out of my system until my day off, when I'll have more time to mess around with it.

Thanks for the suggestion about using a different version of Catalyst, I'll give that a try.

Also, my buddy suggested I download DirectX 11 after I put the card back in, so I'll be giving that a shot as well.

I'll keep you updated as the saga continues!

Hey folks, I'm finally back after a long, bizarre ordeal, and I've solved the problem I was having with my 5770.

After talking to a kindly old man who'd been building computers since before I was born, I decided that the big issue was heat and poor air circulation inside the case. Using the overclocking tool that came with the card, I cranked up the fan to blow at 97% capacity all the time after carefully tucking away all the extra wires. Lo and behold, everything runs like a champ and I finally get to enjoy the glorious power of this card.

Thanks to everybody for their help, and remember, it's not always a driver issue.

Have a great day, everyone!

That's awesome that the solution worked for you. I actually tried the same thing, although running the fan at 80% instead of 97%. Definitely did not help. I've tried so many solutions that I don't know what's actually making a difference anymore.

  • Catalyst 10.7 drivers did not help.
  • Running the cards in crossfire is MAD unstable.
  • Running the cards 1 at a time is much better, although one card has artifacting going on (bad VRAM?). The other was working fine until last night, when it started crashing upon loading a level in COD:MW2.
  • Switched back to the artifacting card, which isn't crashing at the moment...
Also, when I was running the cards in crossfire, I noticed that Crysis: Warhead would crash instantly if started in fullscreen mode, but if I played it in a window, it was fine. Anyone know why that is?

I'm going to try the method above for creating a profile and then manually editing the values. Hopefully that will make some improvement. Still waiting to hear back from XFX support, as well.

I've also heard that the 64-bit version of windows (or maybe just the 64-bit catalyst drivers) is to blame, and if you switch to the 32-bit version, your problems will go away. I don't want to do this, though, because then I won't be able to use all 4gb of RAM in my system.

I have a HIS HD5750 card. And had same problems that people have with the 5770 card.

From His i did get the following suggestion.

Enable Overdrive in the CCC and set the slider of the memory clock slightly. May be to increase by 5Mhz. Click Apply. This will disable the switching of clocks.

PS, on my motherboard I had to change the Mhz on the PSIe2 slots.

If I understand correctly, you're saying this will prevent the card from switching into 2D mode?

Well I am no expert, and I am not quite sure. But I think it is to make sure that the clock of the CPU and the graphic card are not the same. On my computer both the CPU and the graphic card was running on 700Mhz. By increasing the graphic card to 705Mhz, it prevents windows from mixing up the clocks.

In the Bios for my motherboard, there is an option to set clock speed for the PCI express card. In my case that to was set by default to 700Mhz, so I did change it to 800Mhz. The changes in the Catalyst setup did not have any effect before I did that. Its a stupid thing but if u use a new gigabyte motherboard, I think it can be worth taking a look at.

Hi all
i have a same kind of problem.
I use ATI RADEON HD 5770 on XP, no problem at all. Gaming most games at high settings for hours.
Now i want to install Win7 next to XP, i install it on a seccond clean drive (35gb free space).
But when the instalation starts, 5 seconds later the monitor says No Signal Input so i cancel the instalation.
Happent serval times. I want to see whats happening so i cancel instal, and format the drive again.
I had this problem a couple of months ago with vista. i was able to get it installed with no problems at all.
But after 10/20 minutes same problem No Signal Input even doing nothing on desktop, tryed win7 same.
But if i launched a game before it is going to crash (Just Cause 2) i can play normal, but after closing the game, 5 seconds later No Signal Input.
I did the test to see if i can run Win7 that was all ok.
I tryed only using my Samung full HD without the monitor pluged, same thing happent.
I will try some things later sayd in this topic, see if that works.
Man, i wanna use DirectX 10/11 in my games!!

Just some updates here on I've tried from around the internet, since I'm still having this problem.
  • Someone (I can't remember if it was here or not) mentioned a recommendation to overclock the GPU just slightly above the original clock. Can't remember the reason why this would do anything. Either way, it did nothing for me.
  • I have been using ATI Tray Tools to keep my GPU at 850Mhz, and Memory at 1200Mhz, which did fix the artifacting, but not the crashing.
  • Someone on a forum mentioned setting PCI latency in your computer's bios up to 128 (my default was 64). This did nothing.
  • Sometimes I would have luck starting a game in windowed mode, and then fullscreen it after a few minutes of play. I think this was just a fluke though, because I had a game crash in windowed mode for the first time tonight.
  • Creating a profile in Catalyst Control Center and manually editing the XML file to set voltage and clock speeds. This also did absolutely nothing.

This is really obnoxious because I can't get more than about 20 minutes of Mass Effect in anymore without it locking up. Sometimes, I can hit control-alt-delete and get out to the task manager. From there, one of two things happens: #1, I alt-tab back into the game, at which point it crashes irrecoverably a second later. Or #2, I close out all programs, log off, and then log back in and try the game, which then crashes just a few minutes in.

Only powering off the computer seems to do anything to reset the "odds" of it crashing. A very perplexing situation.

I'm really at my wits end, and no drivers that I've tried yet have fixed the problem. To make things worse, XFX support randomly stopped replying to my emails (we had a nice little thread going, with response no more than 8 hours after I would email them). I haven't heard from them in over a week.

The only remaining things I can think of to try are:
  • Driver-sweep my Catalyst 10.7 drivers, and try the version specifically from XFX.
  • Delete and reinstall Windows 7 32-bit (supposedly this problem only happens on 64-bit versions?)
  • Try upgrading the 5770's bios

Has anyone made anymore headway, or are we pretty much all just stuck trying a bunch of different workarounds?

or is it specific manufacturer's cards? XFX, HIS? bios problem?

mine MSI 5770 is working without any problems whatsoever. it's tiny little bit overclocked from factory, though. like 25MHz more or something.

No.

My card is not overclocked, and it has problems. I have tried overclocking as well as underclocking in an attempt to solve this problem, but to no avail.

Also, there are many threads in many forums across the internet filled with owners of ATI's 5000-series cards who have the same problem. It's not just one brand, and it's not even just the 5770.

Hi PhaseShift, to me it sound like a classic heat problem. I am sure you already have tested your card for heat, but if not it might be worth doing.

I used FunMark to test mine. My card did go from normally around 30 to 70 degrees under max load.

hmm... weird. if different brands then it could be (as Gehaa mentioned) cooling problem.

or maybe it needs more wattage because PSU is too weak
