I've just done a Ping test, never done one of those before.

This is the speed test done just after.

Personally I'd kick BT into touch. Are you on their up to 8Mb tariff and how far are you away from your exchange.

I've been back with BT since last May. I'm about 1.37 km from the exchange, this speed is miles better than I was getting before for the same money, I only got ½ MB then in fact early in this thread I have a post showing what my speed used to be.

BT are the only provider in the exchange so anyone else has to buy from them then sell to me so my thinking was why go around the houses if anything goes wrong I've only got one provider to deal with.

The connection is very stable and it will be the last quarter of next year before the exchange is brought up to 21CN plus there's no chance cable will get here at all, we can't even have gas installed in the village. :)

I don't even understand what the Ping test results mean anyway.:p

Hi Joan
The BT ADSL business is administered by BT Wholesale. They sell to their retail arm BT Connect or BT Internet (not sure which it is now as we have BT Openreach as well) on the same conditions and pricing as they sell to all the other ISP's. The difference is the service you get from the various ISP's. Some can be as much as 5 mb better speed than others but that is not the only criteria to check. The level of security becomes more and more important as time passes. Some ISP's have very good anti spam software, in some it is very poor. Hence you hear of some people who get twenty or thirty spam emails a day. Also length of contract is important, you can start off fine but after a month or so your service gets poor if the ISP is successful in recruiting more customers and they begin to collapse under the strain. Just like Talk Talk did. Then you find you can't cancel your contract without a hefty penalty. I haven't had a spam email for at least two years and I have four live email addresses. My ISP costs me £13 a month for which I get up to 8Mb download (Actual average is 6.5Mb) and all of my landline telephone calls day and night up to 500 minutes per month. I get £50 for every new customer I send to them so I try to get at least 4 a year (That's going off a bit now of course, I have been doing that for abour 5 years and am running out of contacts)
This is the official definition of the "Ping":
This measurement tells how long it takes a "packet" of data to travel from your computer to a server on the Internet and back. Whenever you experience delayed responses in Internet applications - this would be due to a higher than desired ping. Similar to packet loss, lower is better when it comes to ping. A result below 100 ms should be expected from any decent broadband connection.
This takes on a lot of importance with the online gaming community. The shorter the ping the more chance you have at shooting your opponent before he/she gets you! Gaming has never appealed to me so I don't set much store by the ping although it does reflect in the normal browsing response times.
Sorry have I prantled on a bit there? :o
Oh Look - I've just got another little pale green thingy! Is that a reward for getting shingles? If it is you can have it back!!!!

Too be honest as I'm not a gamer and don't do that much downloading it's more important to me to have a stable connection with a router that is secure rather than a fast speed but it comes with constant drop outs or other problems.

I used to be with TalkTalk, well it was Onetel when I started with them, I had my landline and Internet with them until I went to broadband.

I kept my landline with them at first but had another ISP for broadband, but the router was only capable of WEP and we couldn't even get that to work so it was an open network, but in all the time I had it the only time anyone else logged on was a neighbour across the road when she went upstairs to check her email, she was very apologetic when I told her :D

Never got anything over about ½ Mb speed ways so decided to go back to BT, it was cheaper for my landline and I get a faster speed for just a few pence more than it was costing, plus I get an Internet phone to use.

BT Wholesale are the sole provider in my exchange anyway so if anything goes wrong at least I don't have to go through a 3rd party to get things fixed.;)

I am on Mediacom Ultra 50/5 for 99.99 not sure why I get these results when I test on speedtest.net using the Sprinfield,MO server which is where I live, which is hosted by Spring NET.. When I test using speakeasy.net using Chicago,IL server I get 47.49 Mbps download and 4.67 Mbps upload and these are consistent.. Springfield recently got DOCSIS 3.0 inplemented, I am glade they did, and I really enjoy my speeds, I am the second person to want this speed, my local office told me since it is so new and is 99.99 per month.

ROCK on Mediacom!!
:D

P.S. Sorry I don't have an image from speakeasy.net
