Windows Mail crippled by KB978542

Last night I installed windows update KB978542, this morning my "hacked in" version of Windows Mail wouldn't open. Just a word of caution. Upon examination I find that this update is directed at a vulnerability in Outlook Express and in Windows mail. Now I just need to figure out how to block/hide it so it won't try to install in the future.

You can hide the update by right clicking on it and choose hide update.

Thanks for the replys. I found the solution immediately after making my post. I'm surprised if no one else has experienced the same problem with the update.

Ah yes, the "fix", sorry. I took the easy way out. Because I caught it so quickly (the next morning, first boot) I simply did a system restore to the night before, to just before the update. If system restore had not been available I'm not sure what I'd have done next. Tried an uninstall of the update for sure and then re-ran the mail1 and mail2 reg hacks which first made Windows mail functional in Windows 7. There had to be some reason Microsoft disabled Windows Mail in Windows 7. I have a hunch this "security update" was intended to cripple the hacked in versions so many people are useing.

I really did not understood the purpose of this patch. Windows Mail isn't enabled by default on Win7, and to get access to it people need to do some "hacks".

1) Why ship Windows Mail if there is no official way to use it?
2) Why patch a thing not supposed to be used?

I've had the same problem but it also wiped out Outlook 2010 Beta so I'm just trying to fix that now.

It is also for Windows Live Mail, which is available for Windows 7.

Just an option/alternative to Windows Mail.
get rid of the crutches..
