I'm So Teed Off With My Windows 7 RC "Upgrade"

Did everything I should have done to enable a smooth upgrade from 7000 to 7100 but assume it's because I install from my C: XP partition (to preserve the disc lettering throughout my various boots) that it wouldn't upgrade and ended up giving me a "Windows.old" which I am not sure what to do with.

To piss me off even further I've forgotten the password to my Easy File Transfer so can't make that work.

So now I have to setup Win 7 from scratch all over #@%^&*!! again.

At setup I got the option to Upgrade or Custom. If I chose Upgrade it told me it couldn't upgrade XP, I know that already, I wasnh't trying to do that.

So I chose custom thinking it would give me an option to upgrade the existing N:Win 7 partition. Instead it threw everything into a windows.old and installed a fresh Win 7.

I'm so teed off I could throw my machine out of the window. But, as it's the only machine I have, I wont.

I'll just pour a really stiff drink and grit my teeth.

To upgrade you'd have had to either do it from the partition you wanted to update or run the setup from the boot menu.

You may have to reinstall all of your programs, but at least your other files are still intact.

windows.old saves all your appdata program settings amongst other things. after you reinstall your programs again you can copy the corresponding files from appdata over to your newly installed c:\users\account\appdata folder.

It seems with win7 that it pays to do a clean install, so Id imagine the same would be true upgrading from vista.

Everything that you had is in the Windows.old folder ,just open it and have a look.

Thanks guys...I'm slowly simmering down here...LOL. I already found drivers I needed in windows.old. Pity I can't think of the password for Easy Transfer which I used just before I did all this. Crazy, I'm usually so particular about that sort of thing. I probably wrote it down and promptly threw it out.

That's what I usually do and it's the only thing I have absolutely no record of, would you believe.

On an up note, I'm downloading Vista SP2 as well, so all is not lost today.

Once your up and running with everything you want back in, just go to windows explorer and delete the win old folders. I had 2 in there and they were taking up 4.65 gb's apiece. Hope this helps

Yes, Vista is an up note. It's the only system that works without any hitches....so far.

Personally, I'd disagree there - Seven has had fewer problems that Vista Ultimate for me, even runs games faster, and remember that officially, Seven is pre-release / beta software and is not guaranteed to work flawlessly when compared to official released software.

And to think, if you had taken the clean install route you could have saved yourself a lot of time and frustration. What's the upside of "upgrading" again?

Upgrade = rarely ever a good idea.

I was hoping to preserve all my files and folders and settings etc.

You can still do that with a clean install.

Simply copy your appdata and programdata folders to another partition/drive.
