To me it is, but only in certain respects. I'll certainly opt for 7 when it's final.

Now to see how many of the hacks I had before I can get to work on this one.

The reason Win7 has been 'born' so soon is because of MS's second disaster, that is Vista (after WinME) lol. Win7 may have come along eventually yes, but a lot later had that abomination, that was Vista, succeeded.

We can skip these two mishaps now and look at the proper roadmap:

Win98 > WinXP > Win7

The other 2 can sit on that top shelf in the dust, forgotten forever, but occasionally talked about for a laugh.

I still think vista is a great Operating System,I have been using it for the last 2 days constantly,and I was very impressed with it because, I had spent the last few months using Seven, and thinking ,OH my god, how did I ever live without Seven, well I was wrong, Vista is still a good OP ,and we have to remember ,Seven wouldn't be here today without Vista,so I dont think we should put it up against the wall in front of the firing squad ,just yet, so I think Ex Brit has a point when he says what he says.

So far Win 7 has given me a lot more grief than Vista has ever done and I've had Vista right from the beta versions.

I admit 7 is smoother running in many respects but it really looks and feels like a watered down Vista to me, so far anyway. I hope more features are added in time.

And to think, if you had taken the clean install route you could have saved yourself a lot of time and frustration. What's the upside of "upgrading" again?

Upgrade = rarely ever a good idea.

He did a fresh install...


ALso, upgrading works well with 7. I've done it about six or so times between various builds and had no problems what so ever. The same goes for Vista > 7.

Really? Well perhaps I misread his first post, but even his response to my other comment sounded as though he had used the upgrade option.

I was intending to upgrade - but it just didn't go that way. Not sure what I did wrong. I ended up with a fresh installation anyway.

I'll put in my two cents in on the Vista vs 7 debate. I've been runnung 7077 on my laptops. Neither machine is out of this world. Duo 1.8 w/ 4 gig of ram.

I had a driver for a Lacie drive that I simply could not install in 7100 on another machine so rather than screw around with it, I installed Vista 64 bit on the " For Experimental Use Only " lap top from the its original OEM disks. Did a complete install including ALL items in the drivers CD. I got the LACIE driver installed and did what I needed to do. I attempted to restart the computer and after growing a beard waiting for it to shutdown and re-start, I shut it down myself. Got it back on after a short 3 min long boot up I started to play around with it and man,,,, what stellar performance!! Actually quite crappy. CPU usage was high for most operations and video refresh was awful even with the proper factory graphic drivers.

Out came the 7100 RC disk, did a clean install, deleting the partition, creating a new, formating and a 16 min long total install. Everything works including internet, Graphics, and sound and network sharing with two other machines and printers. The only thing I needed to install was the laptop's Web Cam software/drivers.

Reboots to an usable desktop take 45 secs and shutdown command is an amazing 15-18 secs.

I have Vista 32 bit on a Q core machine that only has 3 gig of ram and it runs OK but not fantastic. As soon as the final 7 is out, it will be replaced with 7

BTE, I have not had a single incidenet recorded in the Actions Center- Running tens accross the last ten days since 7100 was installed.

I guess I'm sold eh!

Just my hands on experiece and oppinion.

Well, I'm slowly getting it all set up - installing all my programmes slowly but surely. Have customised and hacked everything to what I had setup on the old one (Windows Mail, Quicklaunch, Tinker, Tinker Sound Scheme, Sidebar, etc).
Not too struck on the over-bright and chintzy welcome screen.

I'm in the process right now of deleting windows.old which will free up 33gb of space, believe it or not!

Question, what is this user32backup folder I have? Not seen that one before. It's only 40kb.

Did you use the backup and restore program?

My advice with windows.old is delete program by program until youre sure you have transferred all your settings.

I have everything installed as it was. The only thing I'm curious about is that folder which contains what you see in the attached thumbnail. Plus why I can't add new gadgets to the sidebar ("unspecified error"), yet the default ones work fine.

No I haven't used Back Up & Restore.

When I googled those two files, all that came up was to do with removing the evaluation copy text on the desktop but I don think thats it in this case (unless you did use that crack).
