Hi all Windows7 users,

I recently installed the new Windows 7 version RC1 build 7100. This was also my first Windows 7 installation. After a clean install I was suprised by the speed and the nice new features. For a long time I used XP, never tried Vista because of the bugs and compatibility issues.

After the windows7 setup, I installed a couple of programs like Adobe CS3, Word 2007 and a software that came with my logitech keyboard&mouse (Logitech diNovo for Notebook).

After a while of installing I stumbled upon some problems. The problems are all "shutdown" related.

1. When I try to exit some of the Adobe CS3 programs (like Adobe Photoshop CS3) the program itself freezes. One program (Flash CS3) tough does exit but it remains running on the background. I discovered that while I was looking at the task manager.

2. When I want to shutdown my computer. Windows7 doesn't completly turnoff my computer. It only shutsdown my harddrive (I can tell that from the sound It makes) and my videocard (My monitor says that it doesn't recieve any signals). I have to shut it down manually by pressing and holding the on/off button on my system for like 5 seconds. Windows XP automaticly shutsdown my system.

Are these known problems ? And are there any solutions ?

thanks in advance...

BTW: i'm using the 32BIT version.

1. I cant help you
2. Open CMD, and type <shutdown/s>to shut it down or <shutdown/r> to restart. Without the brackets, though.
That might work

Ok, I rechecked the Start Menu and it was set to Shut Down. Next I shutdown windows and the problem remains.

The screen turns black and my monitor gives "No signal", My harddrive spins off, but my system is still on. In XP the computer turns completly off after I choose Shutdown.

any other suggestions ?

It's very possible that your motherboard (no specs given) is NOT compatible with Win-7.

Such incompatibilities are not at all uncommon.

Since windows 98 days, I've never used the START > Shutdown method of shutting down my PC. I've always used a Shortcut, for a Quick Shutdown, from an icon on my desktop.
Here's the shortcut for Win-7:

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

Cut and paste, so you get all the spaces in the right place.

make yourself a desktop shortcut with that syntax and see how it works.
For me, it's worked just fine for XP, Vista 64 and Win-7, 64

Cheers mates!

I tried your method dr.who. But the problem still remains. I doubt it would be my motherboard because it is a board that's running a Q6600.

It might be worth looking for a BIOS update? I've just done a clean install of the RC (x64), and I've installed all my usual apps - Photoshop CS4, CorelDRAW, VMWare, WinZip, UltraEdit, FTPVoyager etc - and my laptop (HP nw9440) shuts down completely. It's much quicker to shutdown than XP or Vista were.

it is a board that's running a Q6600.

Well, I don't know what a Q6600 is, but I do know about incompatibilities.
Unless that mobo was certified to run Windows 7, it just may not be compatible. I didn't say that's absolutely the problem, but it's always a possibility.

Checking for mobo bios updates is good advise too.

I have an old AsRock mobo that runs 98, ME, XP and even Vista 32, with no appreciable problems, but when I tried to run a DOS program to shutdown the PC, from a DOS boot floppy, the program failed to do it and ended with an error message about there being "No ATX". That's dumb, because that PC is using an Antec Earthwatts 650 PSU.....that's about as ATX as you can get. :p
The problem is in the motherboard, not the PSU.

Anyway, I hope someone will give my shutdown shortcut a try and I hope they will like it. I sure do!
Somehow, going to START in order to STOP, just agrivated the heck out of me.

Changing the -s in that shortcut to a -r changes the command to a nice REBOOT command. I have both on my own desktop.

The '00' in that shortcut is the time delay, in seconds, before shutdown.
For those who think that zero seconds, won't work, or may be dangerous, just throw a few seconds in there.

Good Luck and Happy Computing!

If it is running a q6600 (processor) then it will be compatible with windows 7 as a q6600 isn't that old. Wasn't they made about the same time as vista? I'm running a q6700 with no issues what so ever and they are the same age. If anything it is a bug that you have got or a bad copy of windows 7.

Can you state what your motherboard is but I will bet it has got nothing to do with that. If it is compatible with a q6600 then it will be compatible with windows 7.

@Dr Who, PC builder, tech and you dont know what a q6600 is:huh: Also, no motherboard will be certified to run windows 7 because it has not been released yet. No hardware will be certified until it is.

I had to Google the Q6600, because I don't use Intel CPU's. Never did!
That's a very high end and very specific cpu and requires a very specific bios.
There's nothing 'Garden Variety' about it.

But CPU aside, no two mobo's are exactly alike and every mobo has a bios specially written for it.

In the above mentioned case the bios may not be the problem at all, but it's foolish to just discount that, off hand, as it actually may enter into the problem. DO, check for bios updates for that board.

And yes, there are a bunch of less than pure, copies of Win-7 floating around.
I guess I lucked out with mine. It just works great.

The Q6600 is totally mainstream and belongs to the quad-core family - that and the Q6700 are two of the most common CPUs here (the UK) at the moment.

I agree, I think it'll be a BIOS issue. I'm runnign a Q6700 with an ASUS board, and I'm also runig a QX9750 with another Asus board. In fact all my desktops and servers are Asus, and all shut down hapily.

I know that the Intel Quad Core CPU's are popular with the home PC builders, but I'm not seeing that many coming out of the Big Box Stores.

Most brand name computers are still coming out with dual core Intels and a lot of AMD's.

Going way back in History, circa 1980, several companies were writing bios chips for the IBM XT mobo. That was my first mobo and I tested several different bios chips, to find one that booted up the fastest. All the bios chips I tested worked fine on that board, but there was a huge difference in the boot time. I finally settled on the Erso Bios, as the fastest.

Over the years, even up to my current MSI mobo, I've always tried to keep the bios up to date. Ya just never know, when the update may solve some weird problem.

Interesting thread,,,, I hope it helps the Author with his problem.

Cheers Mates,

Agreed, it's incredible how the same chip can perform in different boards and with different BIOS.

I tend to only update BIOS when I have a problem (I've had my fingers burned in the past and had to roll back) but in this case I suggest the OP tries to find a mroe recent BIOS. If nothing else, it'll either fix it or rule it out.

Just a point. But how can any hardware be 7 compatible yet anyway?

I thought that, but wasn't going to say it (yet).;)

But since Win-7 is really Vista with a tummy tuck and botox, it should run on any mobo that works OK with Vista Ultimate 64.
"Should" being the key word. Again, I take nothing for granted. I suspect everything and test everything before ever trusting it.
I've been bitten in the pants too many times over the past 29 years, to not be that way.
Once bitten, twice shy!

I've been pushing Win-7 Ultimate 64 to the breaking point.
Last night I fired up five scanners, to run simultaneously, and Win-7 took it in stride. So far I've seen no bsod's and I've had NO lock-ups.
It just runs and runs and runs.....no matter what I throw at it.
And when I'm all done, it shuts down in about five seconds, from my Quick Shutdown shortcut.

Most amazing was that it picked up all my internal hardware without me ever having to load the first driver. Video, sound and LAN, all worked perfectly.
The drivers for my two Epson printers and my ZOOM External modem all work just fine with Win-7.

Yep, pretty much the same here.

On my HP nw9440 laptop I get three unknown devices (smartcard reader, modem, and Mobile Data Protection sensor) but in each case I just install the Vista x64 drivers.

On my desktop (Asus P5-WDG2 WS Pro) all the devices are recognised automatically, no drivers to load (with Vista I had 5 or 6 to load).

And you're right, it just works! Never before have I been brave enough to use a RC as my main OS on my work laptop, but I'm happily using the RC and have faith in it.

It's good to see that alot of people are interested in this problem.

So far I haven't solved my problem and it starts to irritate me that I have to manually shut down the PC by pressing and holding the power button.

As for my computer, I bought it at a store here in the Netherlands called Paradigit. Back then (I think like 2 years ago) it was a brand new system with the latest specs. I didn't put the configuration together either (like I used to do..), it was a complete prebuild configuration. I haven't checked wich MOBO is installed but I assume it's an ASUS mobo. (IMO the best brand).

I also never did a MOBO update, i'm going to check that tommorrow.
