[RC Build 7100] Shutdown issues

Anyway, I hope someone will give my shutdown shortcut a try and I hope they will like it. I sure do!
Somehow, going to START in order to STOP, just agrivated the heck out of me.

Changing the -s in that shortcut to a -r changes the command to a nice REBOOT command. I have both on my own desktop.

The '00' in that shortcut is the time delay, in seconds, before shutdown.
For those who think that zero seconds, won't work, or may be dangerous, just throw a few seconds in there.

Thank you DrWho, I made both shortcuts and they work like a charm.
Now I don`t have to start to finish.:huh:

As for the OP`s problem, I don`t have a solution. I have had a simular problem with sleep mode waking on its own and then locking up the computer(no keyboard or mouse input). Whenever this happens the only thing to do is hard power off by holding the power button until it powers off. This has happened in 7057, 7068, 7077, and 7100 so I have gone back to Vista 32-bit for now since it does not have this problem.

My computer specs are: Dell XPS 730 purchased December 08, 790i, E8400, 4 GB ram, nVidia graphics, nVidia PhysX, X-Fi, TV tuner.

Well I had no problems whatsoever with build 7000 x64.
ANd I have hw problems with W7x64 RC1. All related to this ASUS PUNDIT P1 m'board ... Netgear Wifi, etc ... Something has changed and to the worse...

I have the same problem than yours drw026. I have to manually shut down the PC by pressing and holding the power button. Because in the other case, I can still hear the fans of the computers, but the screen says that there is no signal anymore.

I will try to update the BIOS.

I run on an ASUS P5B with en E6600 for the processor.

I'm a working PC Tech and I see lots of power supply failures with Dells.
It appears to be the #1 failure with Dell desktop PC's. The XPS line seems to be the worse for PSU and even mobo problems.

But if anyone cares to follow this exercise, just do an internet search for SLEEP or HIBERNATE problems. Both seem to be prone to failure.
With that knowledge in mind, I make sure that both are disabled on every PC I set up.
Neither one is required on a HOME computer.
Home computers are built with cheap components from the lowest bidder and should be shut OFF when not in use.

I can't remember exactly what my first version of Win-7 was, I suspect somewhere around 7048, but in all the versions I've tested (now testing 7127) I've NOT once had any problems with the OS locking up or doing anything obscene.

Every time I install a new version of Win-7, I apply all the same tweaks that I use with Vista. Except for the differences from XP, (looks and acts too much like Vista, which I find annoying) Win-7 always runs great on my PC.

Just finding the place to shutdown Hibernation (in Win-7) was a real pain in the drain, so I just wrote a little script to do the job in about one second. Since I work on so many different PC's, I like to save all the time I can.

I've had this problem from day one with 2 versions of Win 7. This problem is happening a lot to people, and seems to have various causes. Sound cards and outdated BIOSs seem to be among their causes. This Laptop has the latest Bios, and it's not like I can change componets to find the cause. Perhaps the most fustrating thing is not being able to pinpoint what is causing the problem. I ran the Windows 7 compatiblity progam and it came up as good. Good thing MS is letting us run this for a while free, untill SP1 is out looks like, because I wouldn't pay for this VISTA re-hash unless it's fixed.

My experience with Dell computers and SLEEP mode are the exact opposit of yours mate. I have five(5) Dell computers, three(3) are XPS`s, the oldest was purchased 03/1999 and the newest was purchased 12/2008. They all run 24/7 using SLEEP and I have not had a power supply or mobo failure on any of them. Most of these computers have TV tuners, CD/DVD burners, upgraded memory, CPU`s, video and audio cards so it`s not like they don`t get pushed from time to time.

The key to keeping any computer functioning properly is regularly scheduled maintenance for both software and hardware.

On my newest computer, SLEEP works fine in Vista but locks up the computer in Windows 7. Is this Dells fault?????? I don`t think so.

If it is running a q6600 (processor) then it will be compatible with windows 7 as a q6600 isn't that old. Wasn't they made about the same time as vista? I'm running a q6700 with no issues what so ever and they are the same age. If anything it is a bug that you have got or a bad copy of windows 7.

Can you state what your motherboard is but I will bet it has got nothing to do with that. If it is compatible with a q6600 then it will be compatible with windows 7.


@Dr Who, PC builder, tech and you dont know what a q6600 is:huh: Also, no motherboard will be certified to run windows 7 because it has not been released yet. No hardware will be certified until it is.

Totally agree. This is not a MB, BIOS or CPU issue. Installed any AV/FW?

Try Process Explorer or something and see if you can shut them down from there. Don´t rin any Adobe software myself so can´t tell if it is an issue with those, but would surpising.

What about checking the Event Viewer (under Admin Tools)? Can probably send you in the right direction of which app is causing your issues.
